Aston Villa striker Donyell Malen has opened up about the unwavering mental strength that carried him through a challenging adaptation period at the Premier League club, confidently stating he always believed he would ultimately succeed.
Difficult beginnings at Villa Park
The 26-year-old Dutch international joined Unai Emery's squad nearly a year ago in the January transfer window for an initial fee of £21 million, but struggled to find his footing initially. Despite becoming a regular in the side, Malen endured a frustrating wait of almost three months before scoring his first goal for the club.
That breakthrough moment finally arrived during a 3-0 victory over Brighton in April, providing relief and validation for the forward after his prolonged goal drought. The difficult transition to a new country, different league, and unfamiliar managerial system tested the player's resolve during those early months.
Malen's philosophy of perseverance
Speaking exclusively to Dutch publication ELF Voetbal, Malen reflected on the mindset that sustained him through the challenging period. "It wasn't always easy in a new environment, a new league, and with a new manager," he acknowledged.
The Villa forward elaborated on his approach: "I had to keep my head down and focus on myself and keep doing the right things. Stay calm. When I came on as a substitute, always think I'm going to do it. Even if the playing time is limited. Even if it's just five minutes."
This disciplined mentality became Malen's foundation for navigating the uncertainties of professional football. "I've always maintained that mentality, and it's what got me where I am today," he stated with conviction.
