Former England internationals Kyle Walker and Darren Bent have both declared that Aston Villa are a bigger club than Tottenham Hotspur. The pair, who played for both clubs during their careers, shared their views on talkSPORT this week amid the growing rivalry between the two Premier League sides.
Walker and Bent's Verdict
When asked by presenter Jason Cundy which club is bigger, Walker said: “I don’t know … you’re putting me on the spot. I’d say Villa, just. They just edge it. I think that they are both massive clubs, both big clubs. But I think Villa winning the Champions League and Tottenham not winning as much in recent years - obviously they were in the Champions League final recently and Villa weren’t - I think that it is very, very close.”
Cundy added: “I think Villa, just. They are very similar-sized clubs when you think of the fan base and where they are, who they are. I think Villa. The fact that they have won the Champions League, or the European Cup, I think that has to nudge it.”
Bent concurred: “I’d probably opt to the side of Villa, but then the argument would be that Villa have spent a few seasons in the Championship recently and Spurs haven’t.” Cundy responded: “It’s amazing how fans get so uptight by who is the bigger club. Honestly, if you really want to rattle a fan base, just say that they are not a big club. That’s it!”
The Financial Context
The debate comes as Tottenham, despite battling relegation threats in recent seasons, have the financial muscle to spend heavily in the transfer market. This has frustrated Villa supporters, given their club's superior on-pitch performances over the same period. However, Premier League financial rules, based on revenue rather than sporting success, have constrained Villa's spending. Tottenham's new stadium and commercial growth have allowed them to outspend Villa, while the Midlands club continues to expand its revenue streams.
Historical Achievements
Aston Villa's 1982 European Cup triumph remains a defining factor in the comparison, as Tottenham have not won Europe's top club competition. Spurs did reach the Champions League final in 2019, but have not claimed a major trophy since the 2008 League Cup. Villa, meanwhile, have also won seven top-flight titles and seven FA Cups, though their most recent league title came in 1981.
Fan Reactions
The comments have sparked debate among supporters of both clubs. Villa fans are likely to welcome the endorsement from two former players, while Tottenham supporters may point to their consistent Premier League presence and larger commercial appeal. The discussion highlights the subjective nature of such comparisons, blending historical success, recent form, and financial power.
