Ollie Watkins Reflects on VAR Call and Villa's Draw at Burnley
Watkins on VAR Call and Villa's Draw at Burnley

Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins has given his verdict on the key VAR call during the 2-2 draw with Burnley at Turf Moor, insisting that the point was a positive result despite failing to beat the already-relegated side.

Watkins put Villa 2-1 ahead in the second half, turning the game on its head after first-half goals from Ross Barkley and Burnley's Jaidon Anthony. However, Zian Flemming struck an equaliser for the hosts just minutes after Watkins' goal, denying Unai Emery's side what would have been a crucial victory in their bid to qualify for the Champions League.

"It was a really tough game and you've seen in recent weeks that they have become stronger," Watkins told Sky Sports post-match. "Manchester City only won 1-0 here. It was a valuable point after going behind but it's disappointing that we got in front and let it slip away."

"It's a good point. If you can't win then don't lose. We've got Liverpool at Villa Park next and we always make it difficult for them. We had an amazing result in Europe a few days ago and the amount of energy and effort you put into those games - you're leaving it all on the pitch. To go again in 48 hours is tough."

Asked about his first-half offside goal, Watkins said: "It was a long ball over the top and hit my shoulder - the ref said they were checking with the VAR - but it was able to stand. I got one ruled out in the first half, which was a shame, I think I need to get smaller boots."

The draw leaves Villa still in the hunt for a top-four finish, with Liverpool next up at Villa Park.
