Albion's ten-game unbeaten run came to an abrupt halt on the final day of the season. James Morrison wanted his side to finish the campaign eleven games unbeaten, but they failed to deliver at Sheffield Wednesday.
The home side, buoyed by their takeover news being confirmed before kick-off, raced into a two-goal lead before half-time thanks to goals from Liam Palmer and former Baggie Nathaniel Chalobah. Albion were poor and could only conjure up a late consolation courtesy of Karlan Grant.
It was far from the ideal ending to the season, but with Albion already safe, many will be glad the campaign has ended.
Fan reaction
Albion fans had their say after the game, with many unhappy with the performance their side turned out. One said: “It didn’t matter, we’re on the beach isn’t an excuse. Today’s performance was unacceptable.” Another insists the best is yet to come, adding: “Congrats to Albion B on their promotion to the EPL... Albion A... safe end of. Be thankful, the best is yet to come. Go the Mozz.”
Another believes it was set up for a Wednesday win and the result shows Albion need to ship a few players out, adding: “If I’d ever be happy for us to lose to a team, it would be Wednesday after all they’ve been through and also in a weird way, kind of glad we played so badly as reminds the fans we still have a fair few bad eggs who got us into this position and still need shipping out imo.”
One Baggie stated: “Ultimately the game didn’t matter so trying not to get too bothered, work was already done. That was a meek performance of a side whose season had ended last week. Fringe players did nothing to forward their claim for next year to the new boss in my opinion.”
And another added: “A really shocking season, poor recruitment of coaches and players. Bilkul got lucky but have to learn fast and get some football expertise into their leadership team. Hopefully Mozza has a say in recruitment and we can rebuild to be more competitive.”
