Birmingham City Urged to Shake Up Lineup for Ipswich Challenge
Birmingham City face a daunting trip to Ipswich Town on Easter Monday, with reporter Alex Dicken calling for significant changes to the starting eleven following a lacklustre performance against Blackburn Rovers on Good Friday.
While frequent alterations to a Championship side are not ideal, head coach Chris Davies cannot afford to stand idle after another uninspiring display. With around 2,000 loyal Bluenoses travelling to Portman Road, the focus is on delivering a performance that entertains, as the team has little left to play for in the league standings.
A Formidable Away Test Awaits
The challenge at Ipswich is particularly steep. The Tractor Boys have amassed an impressive 43 points from their 20 home games this season, a record bettered only by league leaders Coventry City. This contrasts sharply with Birmingham's dire away form, which includes 12 defeats in 20 matches and a -15 goal difference, placing them in the bottom four of the away table.
To improve their chances, Davies is advised to make several strategic selections. The return of German centre-back Phil Neumann is recommended, as the team's results have notably improved when he partners Christoph Klarer. Neither Jack Robinson nor Jonathan Panzo have shown enough to justify keeping Neumann out of the side.
Key Adjustments Across the Pitch
In defence, Tomoki Iwata is suggested as the best option at right-back, assuming Ethan Laird continues on the left. The midfield balance has been problematic all season, but the pairing of Paik Seung-ho and Jhon Solis, which was effective during a positive run in January and February, should be reinstated.
Up front, Carlos Vicente and August Priske are tipped to start. Priske, a 6ft 4in Dane, showed promise as a substitute against Blackburn and possesses the attributes to succeed in the Championship. Given the club's investment in him, playing him now to prepare for next season is crucial. However, patience is advised due to the strength of the opposition and his limited starting experience away from home.
Vicente's role would be to supply Priske with early crosses, leveraging his speed against an Ipswich side expected to dominate possession. The remaining two attacking positions should be filled with mobile and experienced players, ruling out Marvin Ducksch for this fixture.
Jay Stansfield is proposed for the number ten role behind Priske, while Demarai Gray needs to step up. Gray has struggled since returning from injury in the New Year, and a big performance is needed from a player many expected to be a key figure this season.
