Birmingham City's Play-Off Hopes Dashed After Third Straight Defeat

Birmingham City manager Chris Davies has issued a damning verdict on his team's season, all but conceding their hopes of reaching the Championship play-offs are over after a third consecutive defeat. The Blues fell 1-0 to Charlton Athletic at The Valley, with substitute Charlie Kelman scoring the decisive goal.

Davies Makes 'Absolutely Clear' Point to Players

Speaking after the match, Davies was blunt in his assessment. "Play-offs are unlikely now," he said. "I think we needed to get something here today and an incredible run. We can put that to one side for now. It's the next game and getting a result in that."

With 10 games remaining, Birmingham remain eight points off the pace, after sixth-placed Wrexham missed a league game to participate in the FA Cup. Davies emphasized the need to guard against the season petering out, stating: "I've made that absolutely clear to the players and I will continue to do so. We've still got a huge amount to play for. We can't let that seep in at all and it's my job to make sure that it doesn't."

Frustrating Performance at The Valley

The match was a frustrating affair for Birmingham, who managed only one shot on target—a tame free-kick from Marvin Ducksch comfortably caught by Charlton goalkeeper Will Mannion. For the second season in a row, Blues were undone by a Charlton long throw-in, with Davies labeling it a "soft goal to concede."

Analysing the performance, Davies noted: "Ultimately we lost the game on a long throw. We weren't at our best again today. First half there was very little in the game, I was comfortable enough with how we weren't inviting pressure... Second half I was encouraged by the way we started. I felt like we had all the momentum for a large period of the half, got into good situations and could have made better decisions."

He added: "If the final touch, final pass or shot had been better the game could have been a bit different. But then we got hit with the sucker-punch from the long throw. It's just such a soft goal to concede. If you don't get the first contact and it bounces then you've reduced your chances significantly of keeping the ball out of the net and we didn't do those two things. It was extremely frustrating to lose a game like that off a throw-in like that."

Looking Ahead to Final Games

Despite the setback, Davies is determined to rally his team for the final stretch of the season. The focus now shifts to avoiding a late-season collapse and building momentum for the future. With key matches ahead, Birmingham will need to address their offensive struggles and defensive vulnerabilities to finish the campaign on a positive note.
