Birmingham City Manager Chris Davies Reacts to Championship Play-Off Expansion

Birmingham City manager Chris Davies has responded with a witty remark when questioned about the upcoming changes to the Championship play-offs, which will now include teams finishing in seventh and eighth positions starting from the next season. The alteration is set to take effect in August, and with Birmingham City currently positioned close to eighth place, the impact on the club could be significant.

Davies' Humorous Take on the New Format

During a press conference held on Thursday, Davies was asked for his reaction to the expansion of the play-offs. He quipped, "Could they make it this season?" This comment highlights the tight race in the league, as Birmingham City sits only two points away from eighth place, though there is an eight-point gap to sixth-placed Wrexham, making the climb more challenging.

Recent consecutive defeats to Millwall and Middlesbrough have weakened Birmingham City's play-off ambitions for the current season. As a result, it appears increasingly likely that the club will remain in the Championship when the new model is implemented. Davies expressed a generally positive outlook on the change, stating, "I'm open to it. There's not a big clamour for it in my mind but I'm not against it. I think it opens the league right up and gives more teams a chance. It will make the Championship even more interesting."

Details of the Expanded Play-Off System

The new format introduces one-off games where fifth place will host eighth and sixth will host seventh. The winners of these matches will then advance to face the teams in third and fourth positions in the traditional two-legged play-off semi-finals. Ultimately, the victors of the semi-finals will compete in the Wembley final, maintaining the usual structure for determining promotion to the Premier League.

Davies elaborated on the benefits of the expansion, noting, "A lot of teams will fancy themselves to get into the Premier League if they finish eighth. I think it's a positive step." He emphasized that this change could keep the season more engaging, adding, "You can see how alive the season still is, imagine if it wasn't, there would be some really boring games with nothing riding on them. Even the top-six is good so I think it will really open it up."

While acknowledging that some may oppose the expansion, Davies concluded, "I'm sure there will be people that are against it but I don't see any harm in it. I think it opens it up really well." As Birmingham City navigates the remainder of the season, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how these changes might influence the club's future prospects in the Championship.
