Donyell Malen Thrives at Roma, Says Italian Football Suits Him Better Than England
Malen: Italian Football Suits Me Better Than England

Donyell Malen Finds His Footing in Italy After Aston Villa Struggles

Dutch striker Donyell Malen has openly admitted that Italian football is a much better fit for his playing style compared to his time in England, where he faced difficulties securing a regular starting position at Aston Villa.

Immediate Impact at AS Roma Under Gasperini

Since joining AS Roma in January, Malen has made a remarkable start, netting eight goals in just 12 appearances across all competitions. This impressive form comes under the guidance of manager Gian Piero Gasperini, whose tactical approach has allowed Malen to shine.

The striker moved to Villa from Borussia Dortmund a year prior to his Italian switch but found himself largely on the sidelines during his single season under Unai Emery. Eager for more playing time as a central forward, Malen sought a transfer, and Emery supported the move, recognizing the player's desire for a new career challenge.

Why Italy Suits Malen's Game

In an interview with De Telegraaf, Malen explained his success at Roma, stating, "We play very offensively, with a lot of pressure and many transitions. That suits me well." He elaborated further, noting that the style of play in Italy aligns perfectly with his strengths.

"Maybe Italy suits me best. I haven't been here that long. I've had a good start and I want to maintain that. But I do think it suits me well in terms of space. And that the way we play suits me well too," Malen added. He emphasized his current momentum, saying, "I'm just training well. I have the momentum. When you score a lot of goals, you feel good, and you want to hold on to that."

Financial Details and Future Prospects

Reports indicate that Roma will be obligated to purchase Malen for €25 million (£21.7 million) if the club qualifies for either the Champions League or Europa League, provided he features in at least half of their matches until the season's end. Aston Villa would retain a 10 percent sell-on clause in any permanent deal and have already received a €2 million (£1.7 million) loan fee.

Although Roma's Europa League exit to Bologna means Malen won't face Villa in April, he can look forward to representing the Netherlands at the upcoming World Cup. There, he is working with Premier League legend Ruud van Nistelrooy, who has joined Ronald Koeman's backroom staff.

Focus on Improvement with National Team

Malen revealed that he has been collaborating with Van Nistelrooy to enhance his skills. "I did have a meeting with him about what I can do better and what I need to do better," he said. "I am trying to improve on those, and we are doing that together now."

Their discussions have focused on technical aspects such as first touch, ball control, finishing techniques, and body positioning during shots. "Those things really make the difference," Malen concluded, highlighting his commitment to continuous development on the international stage.
