Nathan Jones fumes at August Priske decision and makes point about Birmingham City

Charlton Athletic manager Nathan Jones was left baffled by refereeing decisions during his team's 1-0 victory over Birmingham City on Saturday, particularly questioning how Blues forward August Priske avoided a red card.

Controversial incidents spark manager's ire

Substitute Charlie Kelman demonstrated predatory instincts inside the box to score the decisive goal when Birmingham failed to clear a long throw-in at The Valley, marking the second consecutive season Charlton has secured victory through this method against their opponents.

Priske had already been substituted by the time Kelman struck, with Birmingham manager Chris Davies opting to replace the young Danish player before he could potentially receive further disciplinary action from referee Sam Allison.

Allison had issued Priske a final warning early in the second half when he collided with Charlton defender Lloyd Jones, following an earlier first-half incident where Priske had clattered into the same player.

Jones questions football rules and officiating consistency

Charlton boss Jones believes Priske was fortunate to remain on the pitch and openly questioned the standard of refereeing in the Championship following the match.

"It wasn't just that it was the nine after it!" Jones said when asked about the first-half incident. "I could not understand how their centre-forward was allowed to not look at the ball and just jump straight into our centre-half. I don't get that."

Jones revealed that his team had complained to the fourth official, who responded that the referee "hadn't seen anything in it." This prompted the manager to express confusion about modern football rules.

"I've got to be honest with you, I don't know the rules of football anymore," Jones admitted. "I genuinely don't. I've no idea on the handball rule anyway. But what I see as clear fouls, easy fouls, they don't see and then they give certain stuff when people go over."

The manager suggested that referees sometimes award fouls "because they don't want any controversy" when players go down easily, while missing what he considers obvious infractions.

"This stuff was happening and he was consistent. I don't get it," Jones continued. "I could get myself in trouble but I've got to be honest, I was baffled by some of those decisions. If we're talking about whether it could be a straight red card then it must be an orange, it must be in between. So then the five or six after... he was consistently doing it."

Narrowing gap between the teams

The victory marked Charlton's second 1-0 win over Birmingham in recent seasons, with the teams having met five times in the last two campaigns. Their encounters have resulted in two 1-0 victories for each side and a 1-1 draw at St Andrew's in December that could have gone either way.

Jones believes the gap between the teams has significantly closed this season compared to last year, when Charlton finished fourth in League One, a full 25 points behind record-breaking title-winners Birmingham City.

"When you look at where we both were last season and the gap that was between us in terms of the level of play," Jones added, "I think we've closed that gap considerably and that's a good thing."

The Championship table reflects this narrowing divide, with just five points separating 18th-placed Charlton Athletic and 12th-placed Birmingham City with ten games remaining in the season.
