West Ham Manager Nuno Espirito Santo Backs Maximilian Kilman to Win Over Critical Fans
West Ham United manager Nuno Espirito Santo has publicly supported defender Maximilian Kilman, expressing confidence that the player can overcome recent fan criticism. Kilman, who joined West Ham in a £40 million transfer from Wolves in 2024, has faced challenges with form and was jeered by sections of the London Stadium crowd during a recent match.
Recent Incident and Fan Reaction
The criticism arose after Kilman clumsily gave away a penalty in a shoot-out defeat against Leeds United in the FA Cup on Sunday. Despite this, Nuno, who previously managed Kilman at Wolves, highlighted the defender's positive contributions during the game. He emphasized that Kilman performed well overall, particularly considering his limited recent playing time.
Nuno stated, "I saw a good game from Max. OK, he was in a penalty incident, but I think he held on quite well. He made a good game, especially for a player that was not involved for such a long period, in terms of competing, duels, in possession, and he was in the build-up for a goal."
Team Support and Togetherness
Nuno also praised the team's unity, noting that Kilman received support from his teammates during the incident. He added, "So he did a lot of good things and I think he handled the situation well. And at the same time, the group helped. I saw team-mates going around him and supporting. It shows a lot of togetherness among ourselves. It's positive. He's OK. He's working well."
This backing comes ahead of a crucial relegation clash between West Ham and Wolves on Friday night. Nuno acknowledged the fans' role, saying, "Look, I think in terms of the fans they are giving much more to us than us to them. So we cannot complain."
Kilman, aged 28, has struggled to find consistent form since his high-profile move from Wolves. However, Nuno's comments suggest a belief in his ability to rebound and contribute positively to the team's efforts in the upcoming matches.
