Blackburn Manager O'Neill Fires Back at Rival Clubs Over Dual Role Controversy
Blackburn Rovers interim manager Michael O'Neill has launched a fierce defense of his dual managerial role after several Championship rivals raised formal concerns with the English Football League. The controversy centers on O'Neill's position as both Blackburn boss and Northern Ireland national team manager during a crucial period in the Championship survival battle.
Conflict of Interest Concerns Raised with EFL
The issue emerged during the recent international break when Northern Ireland's squad included players from clubs directly competing with Blackburn Rovers in the Championship relegation fight. Oxford United had four players selected for the national team, while Portsmouth featured Terry Devlin and West Bromwich Albion included Isaac Price in the squad.
Multiple clubs reportedly contacted the EFL expressing concerns about how these players would be managed during the international fixtures, particularly regarding playing time in Northern Ireland's friendly match against Wales in Cardiff. The EFL confirmed receiving communications from "one or more clubs" but stated the matter fell outside their jurisdiction.
O'Neill Expresses Disappointment with Rivals' Approach
Following Northern Ireland's match against Wales, O'Neill revealed his frustration with how rival clubs handled their concerns. "I was a little bit disappointed with that because I didn't get a phone call from any of the managers," O'Neill stated. "I didn't get a phone call from anyone from their respective clubs."
The experienced manager emphasized his track record in international management, saying, "It's disappointing given that I've managed over 100 international games, and I've always put the players first." O'Neill insisted he consistently prioritizes player welfare and protection in both his roles.
Playing Time Distribution During International Break
During the Wales friendly, two Oxford United players featured for 64 minutes each, while another came off the bench at that point. A fourth Oxford player did not participate in the match. West Bromwich Albion's Isaac Price was substituted at halftime, though there is no confirmation that Albion was among the clubs that raised concerns with the EFL.
BBC Oxford reported that Oxford United was definitely one of the clubs that contacted the league about the situation, given their significant representation in the Northern Ireland squad.
O'Neill Questions Clubs' Consistency on International Players
The former Stoke City manager questioned the consistency of clubs' attitudes toward international players, noting, "These clubs, they ask for references on players, they ask for character references, level of performance from us and our staff when they want to sign these players."
O'Neill pointed out the apparent contradiction in clubs' positions, adding, "They were international players when they signed them. Now suddenly it becomes a bit of an issue that they're international players." The Blackburn boss took over at Ewood Park earlier this season on an interim basis until the campaign concludes, while maintaining his responsibilities with the Northern Ireland national team.
