Championship rivals Birmingham City and West Bromwich Albion have both been told to consider signing a promising young player from their local rivals, Aston Villa, as the January transfer window draws to a close. This advice comes from a former scout who believes a move could benefit all parties involved.
Midlands Clubs Facing Crucial Season End
Both Birmingham City and West Bromwich Albion entered the Championship season with high expectations, but neither has fully lived up to their ambitions so far. Birmingham, under manager Chris Davies, currently sit in 13th place in the second tier. However, they are just five points off the top six, a position they undoubtedly targeted after a summer of high-profile arrivals at St. Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park. While some new signings have struggled to adapt, the club aims to establish itself as a formidable force at this level, having been promoted just last season.
In contrast, West Bromwich Albion retain perennial promotion aspirations but have faced significant challenges this term. The Baggies struggled under former head coach Ryan Mason, and their problems have persisted under new boss Eric Ramsay. This has left them in 19th position, with growing concerns about relegation as the season progresses.
Transfer Advice for Barry's Future
Both clubs have been active in the January transfer market and are expected to seek further additions to bolster their squads for the remainder of the season. A potential target for both could be Aston Villa youngster Louie Barry, according to former Villa scout Bryan King. The 22-year-old forward has returned to Villa Park after a brief loan spell at Sheffield United, where he made just nine appearances and failed to make a significant impact under manager Chris Wilder.
Barry, a former West Brom and Barcelona academy prospect, is still considered capable of proving himself in the Championship. He previously shone on loan with League One side Stockport County in the first half of last season, demonstrating his potential. His future remains uncertain, and it is crucial that he finds a new club where he can perform at his best and continue his development.
Scout Recommends Local Move
King shared his insights with Villa News, suggesting that Barry's next move should be to a Championship club on Villa's terms, rather than his own. He mentioned both Birmingham City and West Bromwich Albion as ideal destinations. "I would have thought he’d be okay in the Championship, but I don’t think Sheffield United was the right place. Wilder didn’t fancy him, and it was difficult for him to get into the side," said King.
He added, "I’d have said someone like Birmingham City or West Brom will want him. That would let Villa keep an eye on him for a local side. He’s still got a lot to learn, and for now, he’s not going to play for Villa’s first team. If a Championship club wants a forward, it’s time for him to move on."
It remains to be seen whether either Birmingham or West Brom will act on this advice and pursue a loan deal for one of their local rivals' brightest young talents. If a Championship side believes Barry could make a difference in their campaign, a mid-season move might well be on the cards, adding an intriguing subplot to the transfer window.
