Birmingham City Eye Move for Former Defender Darren Purse
Birmingham City are reportedly considering a move for former player Darren Purse to fill their vacant U21s managerial position. According to a report by BirminghamLive, the 49-year-old is currently under consideration for the role.
Purse's Current Role and Background
Darren Purse currently holds a similar position with League One promotion hopefuls Cardiff City, where he has worked his way up to become the Bluebirds' U23s manager. The former defender played for Birmingham City from 1998 to 2004, making 200 appearances in all competitions and scoring 11 goals.
After starting his career at Leyton Orient's academy, Purse went on to have spells at West Brom, Sheffield Wednesday, and Millwall before retiring in 2018 following a stint at non-league Enfield Town. He began his coaching career at Oxford United before joining Cardiff in 2021.
Birmingham's Current Situation
The news comes as Birmingham City's first team suffered a 3-1 home defeat to Middlesbrough on Monday night, with Marvin Ducksch scoring their only goal. Head coach Chris Davies acknowledged Middlesbrough's strong performance, noting they played a different shape than anticipated.
With 11 fixtures remaining this season, Birmingham's hopes of reaching the play-offs are fading rapidly. The club now faces an important decision regarding their U21s managerial situation as they look to build for the future.
Potential Decision for Purse
If Birmingham City make a formal approach, Purse would face a significant decision. He has been a good servant to Cardiff City as they aim to secure promotion from League One, but a return to his former club and a new challenge at Birmingham could prove tempting.
The former England youth international's experience both as a player at St Andrews and his recent coaching development make him an intriguing candidate for the U21s role at Birmingham City.
