Birmingham City Predicted XI for Hull Clash: Two Dilemmas and No Ducksch
Birmingham City travel to Hull City on Saturday aiming to build on their recent improvement in the Championship run-in. Manager Chris Davies faces a classic managerial conundrum: stick with a winning team or rotate players during a busy three-game week that includes upcoming home matches against Bristol City and Preston.
Defensive Decisions and Midfield Puzzles
The old adage of never changing a winning team comes to mind, especially after Davies found the right formula in last weekend's triumph over Wrexham. However, with multiple games in quick succession, some adjustments might be necessary to give players opportunities in these final four matches of the season.
At right-back, Ethan Laird could potentially start only his third Championship game, possibly at the expense of Bright Osayi-Samuel. Yet dropping Osayi-Samuel after one of his best performances in Royal Blue seems unlikely, meaning Laird might have to wait until Wednesday's match against Bristol City for his chance.
The other three defensive positions appear settled. Data suggests Phil Neumann is Christoph Klarer's best partner in central defense, and dropping the German again would be counterproductive. Meanwhile, Kai Wagner is virtually guaranteed to start at left-back following his superb return to action last weekend.
In midfield, Jhon Solis is expected to start despite being replaced at halftime against Wrexham after receiving a caution. The Colombian's place seems secure, but the question remains about who partners him. Paik Seung-ho recorded his first assist of the season against Wrexham, but Davies might prefer Tomoki Iwata's combative qualities against a Hull team that has fought their way to 20 league victories this campaign.
Attack Settled Without Ducksch
The attacking lineup presents fewer dilemmas for Davies. Marvin Ducksch's absence due to an off-field misdemeanor—he was charged with drink-driving earlier this week—has opened the door for Jay Stansfield and August Priske. The pair have started to form a promising partnership, and most Birmingham supporters would like to see them continue together to develop their understanding ahead of next season.
Both Stansfield and Priske are contracted until 2031, giving Davies incentive to persist with the developing partnership. On the wings, Carlos Vicente and Ibrahim Osman are in excellent form and should retain their places. Vicente has been favored away from home over Patrick Roberts, whose last away start came against Oxford United in January—the same day Vicente made his debut following his £7 million transfer from Deportivo Alaves.
After considering all these factors, the predicted lineup remains unchanged from last week's victory. Birmingham City are expected to line up in a 4-2-3-1 formation against Hull City.
Predicted Birmingham City XI (4-2-3-1):
- Goalkeeper: Beadle
- Defenders: Osayi-Samuel, Neumann, Klarer, Wagner
- Midfielders: Solis, Iwata
- Attacking Midfielders: Vicente, Stansfield, Osman
- Striker: Priske
This selection reflects Davies's likely preference for consistency while acknowledging the squad rotation possibilities during this demanding period of the Championship season.
