Birmingham City's Summer Transfer Window Set for Major Overhaul
Birmingham City are gearing up for a substantial summer transfer window, with the club expected to make numerous signings to address key squad deficiencies. Since their return to the Championship, Blues have signed 18 players, and this summer promises further activity regardless of manager Chris Davies's future.
Squad Uncertainty and Loan Returns
Davies is under scrutiny after Birmingham failed to meet pre-season promotion expectations, adding to uncertainty within the playing squad. The club has four loan players whose deals are likely to expire. Goalkeeper James Beadle will return to Brighton & Hove Albion after a developmental season, while Ghanaian winger Ibrahim Osman is also set to depart.
Midfielders Tommy Doyle and Jhon Solis face unclear futures; their loans from Wolverhampton Wanderers and Girona, respectively, included permanent options contingent on promotion, which now seems unlikely. Davies anticipates Doyle's return to Wolves, but Solis could be retained due to an option-to-buy clause, having shown physicality and ball-winning skills that addressed earlier season weaknesses.
Key Positions in Need of Reinforcement
With these potential exits, Birmingham urgently require a goalkeeper with Championship experience as a clear number one, two midfielders, and a winger. Defensively, at least two signings are essential, including a left-sided centre-back to stabilize a frequently changed backline. Ethan Pinnock was a January target, but at 33, his age is a consideration despite his experience.
A right-back is also needed to compete with Ethan Laird, as Bright Osayi-Samuel has underperformed, and Laird's availability has been inconsistent. In attack, the club is well-stocked on the wings with Patrick Roberts, Demarai Gray, and Carlos Vicente, but another left-winger would provide depth.
Forward Line Adjustments and Tactical Needs
Strikers Jay Stansfield and August Priske will remain, but Kyogo Furuhashi is likely to be sold, and Marvin Ducksch may leave after one season in England, necessitating replacements. Additionally, Birmingham lack a natural number 10, a 'classic 10' as Davies terms it, to unlock defences—a gap filled inadequately by Ducksch and Stansfield this season.
Comparisons to rivals highlight this need, with players like Jack Rudoni at Coventry and Finn Azaz at Southampton excelling in that role. The summer window is poised to be busy, with Blues potentially needing up to eight new signings to compete effectively in the Championship.
