Unai Emery Reflects on Aston Villa's Europa League Progression
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery addressed the media following his team's 2-0 victory over Lille in the second leg of their Europa League round of 16 clash at Villa Park. The win secured Villa's place in the quarter-finals, with goals from John McGinn and Leon Bailey sealing the result.
Emery's Assessment of the Victory
When asked about his thoughts on the match, Emery expressed satisfaction with Villa's performance across both legs. "I am happy with how we performed in the two matches, and how we tried to play serious, being organised and respecting the opponent," he said. "We were not brilliant in those two matches, but we were consistent and we defended well, dominating when we could dominate." He emphasized the team's ruthlessness in key moments, noting that such competitive displays were necessary for success.
Praise for Jadon Sancho and John McGinn
Emery responded to comments about Jadon Sancho having his best game for Villa, agreeing that the player showed high-level qualities. "Hopefully we will play matches improving the match he played today. Today he played well," Emery stated. "Sancho has some qualities which are high-level qualities. Today he showed it. Very important for us."
Regarding John McGinn's impact, Emery highlighted the midfielder's return to fitness and growing importance. "He needs minutes, and today he added minutes for him and for the team. He is getting fit again," he explained. "He played 70 minutes, progressively getting better. The first half he was recovering confidence, playing on the left side. He was feeling comfortable there." Emery added that McGinn's goal in the second half boosted his confidence and that recovering players like him, along with Youri Tielemans and Matty Cash, would enhance the squad's performance.
Squad Utilization and Tactical Plans
Emery discussed how he has managed the squad throughout the Europa League campaign, balancing it with Premier League priorities. "We are focusing all the season through the Premier League - it is the priority. Then, Europa League, which is a very difficult competition to win," he said. "During the process we are enjoying the way competing and using different moments to use different players." He stressed the importance of making intelligent decisions to compete effectively with available players.
On the tactical approach over the two legs, Emery outlined the plan to play with personality and adapt to Lille's style. "The plan was to play with our personality and to dominate the match in case Lille were doing intense pressing," he detailed. "We had to compete and adapt to them. When they had the ball, it was difficult to recover the ball. We were patient, like we were away - today we did that same." He praised the team's defensive structure and ability to be ruthless in transitions, citing Emiliano Martinez's key pass that led to a goal as part of the strategy.
Role of Emiliano Martinez
Emery highlighted the significance of goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez in executing the game plan. "Emi Martinez is very important. He usually can start showing our game plan, playing short and trying to progress with passes with the centre-backs," he remarked. "He can be patient, but also go long like he did with the pass he did for Sancho." Emery recalled a similar pass from Martinez in a previous match, underscoring his ability to contribute both defensively and in building attacks.
Overall, Emery's comments reflect a focused and strategic approach as Aston Villa advances in the Europa League, with an emphasis on squad depth and tactical flexibility.
