FIFA to Monitor Iran Situation Ahead of 2026 World Cup Amid US Military Action

FIFA has announced it will 'monitor developments' in Iran following recent military action launched by the United States. The statement comes as Iran has qualified for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026, set to take place this summer across America, Canada, and Mexico.

US President Donald Trump declared that 'major combat operations' were underway after missile strikes were conducted alongside Israel on Saturday, February 28. In response, Iran has retaliated with strikes on Israel and Qatar, as well as other targets in the Middle East.

FIFA's Response and World Cup Preparations

FIFA's secretary general, Mattias Grafstrom, addressed the situation at the International Football Association Board's annual general meeting in Cardiff, Wales. "I read the news [about Iran] this morning the same way you did," Grafstrom stated via ESPN. "We had a meeting today and it is premature to comment in detail, but we will monitor developments around all issues around the world."

Grafstrom emphasized FIFA's focus on ensuring a safe World Cup with all teams participating. "We had the finals draw in Washington in which all teams participated, and our focus is on a safe World Cup with all the teams participating," he added. "We will continue to communicate as we always do with three [host] governments as we always do in any case. Everybody will be safe."

Iran's World Cup Schedule and Travel Advisory

Iran has been drawn in Group G for the World Cup, alongside Belgium, New Zealand, and Egypt. According to reports, Iran is scheduled to play two of its group games in Los Angeles, with the third match taking place in Seattle.

Following the military strikes, the UK government has issued updated travel advice for several Middle Eastern countries, including Bahrain, the UAE, Qatar, and Kuwait. The advisory urges people to "immediately shelter in place" due to the escalating tensions.

As the situation develops, FIFA remains committed to monitoring events closely to ensure the safety and participation of all teams in the highly anticipated 2026 World Cup.
