Hemming and Van Leeuwen Analyze All England Defeat After Unforced Errors
Callum Hemming and Estelle van Leeuwen have reflected on their disappointing first-round exit at the YONEX All England 2026, attributing the loss to simple errors and a lack of consistent rhythm. The mixed doubles pairing from Milton Keynes fell to a straight-games defeat against the experienced Malaysian duo Goh Soon Huat and Lai Shevon Jemie, with scores of 21-14 and 21-12 at the Utilita Arena.
A Promising Start That Faded Quickly
Despite racing to an early 7-2 lead in the opening game, winning five consecutive points, Hemming and Van Leeuwen were unable to maintain their momentum. The world number 11 opponents quickly reeled them in, showcasing superior speed and capitalizing on mistakes. The English pair conceded two runs of five points in a row, ultimately dropping the first game 21-14 after being 16-14 down.
Hemming commented on the match dynamics, stating, "I think we started off quite well, and then they reacted to how we came out even better. And I don't think we reacted very well to that. I don't think we found a good solid rhythm in our rallies today."
Struggles in the Second Game and Injury Impacts
The second game saw the English pair never taking the lead, with Van Leeuwen particularly struggling to find her range in the large arena. However, they kept pushing and were close to levelling the contest, only to be thwarted by an over-the-net call. Van Leeuwen emphasized the need for higher quality play against top opponents.
"We didn't really find any rhythm today," she said. "We have a good two or three points but then they would string together a good four or five points or we would make pretty simple errors. You can't do that against a pair that good."
The pair's preparation has been hampered by Van Leeuwen's back injury, affecting their winter training. Despite this setback, they remain optimistic about future performances.
Looking Ahead to the Swiss Open
Hemming and Van Leeuwen will return to action next week at the Swiss Open, viewing it as an opportunity to bounce back. Van Leeuwen expressed disappointment at not performing their best in front of a home crowd but highlighted the support from their coaching team.
She added, "We are feeling good, we are obviously gutted that we didn't play our best in a home tournament with a home crowd but it doesn't mean that we can't go out next week at the Swiss Open and put out a good performance against another top pair. We have got good coaches around us now that we think we can do really well with so we will just keep working towards it."
The YONEX All England Open Badminton Championships remains a premier event in the sport, with tickets available for the 2026 schedule. For Hemming and Van Leeuwen, the focus now shifts to refining their game and minimizing errors as they aim for better results in upcoming tournaments.
