Former England footballer Karen Carney has broken her silence after her historic victory on Strictly Come Dancing, sharing a touching tribute to her fellow finalists.
A Historic Victory for the Lioness
The Birmingham-born sports star, who played for Birmingham City and the Lionesses, made television history on Saturday, 20 December 2025. She became the first footballer ever to lift the coveted Glitterball Trophy on the BBC's flagship dance competition, achieving the feat with her professional partner, Carlos Gu.
In the immediate aftermath of the win, an elated Carney took to social media with a video message. "Hi everybody," she said. "Just wanted to say thank you to everybody that voted for both me and Carlos. You've made our dreams come true and thank you for bringing so much joy into our lives, and I hope that we brought joy to you."
A Message to Fellow Finalists
After having a day for the monumental achievement to sink in, Carney returned to Instagram on Sunday, 21 December with a more reflective post. This time, she dedicated a special message to the other couples who shared the final stage with her.
She directly addressed presenter George Clarke and his partner Alexis Warr, as well as actress Amber Davies and her partner Nikita Kuzmin.
"It has been so incredibly special being on this journey with you right until the end," Carney wrote. "Last night was a celebration and I’m so grateful we could experience that together - you were all incredible!"
She praised them as some of the "loveliest, most caring people I’ve ever met," adding that sharing the dance floor from start to finish had been "the biggest honour."
Friends for Life
Carney's message concluded on a poignant note, expressing disbelief that their shared dancing journey was over but gratitude for the lasting bonds formed. "I can’t believe that was our last time dancing together but I’m so thankful I have friends for life in all of you," she stated.
Her posts were accompanied by photos from the glittering final, including one of her and Carlos holding the trophy aloft and another showing a group hug with all four finalist couples, capturing the camaraderie of the competition's climax.
