West Brom Icon Kevin Phillips Predicts James Morrison as Future Permanent Boss
Hawthorns legend Kevin Phillips has publicly endorsed his former team-mate James Morrison to secure the full-time managerial position at West Bromwich Albion. Phillips, a celebrated goal hero for the club, expressed strong support for Morrison to lead the team from the upcoming season onwards.
Morrison's Interim Appointment and Impact
James Morrison, previously serving as first-team coach, was appointed interim manager in early March following the dismissal of Eric Ramsay, the second permanent head coach of the campaign. As a former Scotland international, Morrison has injected new energy into Albion's battle to avoid relegation from the Championship. However, this week, hopes were potentially dampened by a charge of an alleged Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) breach.
Phillips emphasized his desire for Morrison to be given a long-term opportunity, stating, "I'd love to see him get the job permanently. He's come in, and he's done an excellent job. Of course, it's a relegation scrap, but they're in a good position. James has shown that he can handle the pressure."
Current Form and Challenges Ahead
Under Morrison's guidance, West Brom have embarked on a seven-match unbeaten run, though three consecutive draws have narrowed their lead over the relegation zone to just two points. The team faces a crucial fixture against mid-table Preston this Saturday, with only four matches remaining in the season. Securing victories is imperative, especially with the uncertainty of a potential EFL sanction looming.
Historical Connection and Experience Concerns
Phillips and Morrison shared the pitch as team-mates during the 2007/08 season, which culminated in Championship title success, with Phillips netting 22 goals. Now working as an EFL pundit, Phillips voiced concerns that the club might opt for a more experienced manager, such as their former boss Tony Mowbray, who had a brief return last year.
He added, "I know the player, I played with him. I would love to see him given the opportunity, but I just fear that the club might go for someone a bit more experienced, but they've already tried that. So why not? I'd love to see James get it. The fans love him. I'd love to see him given a crack at it next season for sure."
Morrison is likely to be a top contender for the permanent role if he successfully steers Albion to safety in the Championship.
