Manchester City Face Potential 40-60 Point Deduction Over 115 Charges
Manchester City could be hit with a staggering 40 to 60-point deduction if found guilty of the 115 alleged financial breaches leveled against them, according to a leading football finance expert. The club and the Premier League remain in a state of uncertainty as they await the outcome of proceedings investigating alleged rule violations spanning from 2009 to 2018.
Protracted Tribunal and Mounting Evidence
The independent tribunal examining City's purported breaches of Premier League financial regulations concluded its 12-week hearing in December 2024, yet the commission has still not published its findings. Manchester City have consistently denied all accusations and are reportedly optimistic about being cleared of wrongdoing.
It has now been 14 months since the tribunal wrapped up, with the commission continuing its deliberations. Football finance specialist Kieran Maguire, who has closely monitored the case, estimates that approximately 500,000 pieces of evidence were submitted by both sides throughout the extensive hearing process.
Expert Analysis Points to Severe Consequences
Maguire anticipates a ruling within the coming months, with City and the Premier League expected to receive 24 hours' advance notice before any public announcement. While predicting the exact outcome remains impossible, he suggests recent precedents indicate the monumental consequences City could face if the verdict goes against them.
"If we look at precedents, we've had Everton and Nottingham Forest with six and four-point deductions for a single offence covering a three-year period," Maguire explained. "The accusations against Manchester City cover a nine-year period, so it's far bigger. The numbers involved, while uncertain, are likely to be quite significant."
"So I think you have to add a zero to what we've seen from Forest and Everton, meaning somewhere between a 40 and 60-point deduction would, on merit, be consistent with other decisions based on logic. If they want to go further, we don't know the severity."
Serious Allegations Beyond Financial Fair Play
Maguire emphasized that the accusations against Manchester City extend beyond typical Financial Fair Play (FFP) violations, which explains the prolonged investigation timeline. "The cases of both Forest and Everton were purely about FFP," he noted. "The accusations against Manchester City are why it's taking so long. Corporate fraud is a very serious accusation."
The expert suggested that proven guilt could lead to fundamental changes at the club. "The board of directors would have to go. How can you be in a meeting room with other Premier League members, of whom you're a shareholder, with this accusation being proven?"
Drawing parallels with Italian football, Maguire added: "If you look at what happened with Juventus in Serie A, their board had to resign when claims about player wages were proven untrue. I think there's an honesty issue here if Manchester City are proven guilty. That could mean a complete restructure of the club."
Complex Deliberations and Frustrating Delays
Considerable frustration surrounds the protracted timeline, attributed to the intricate nature of the proceedings and the requirement for the three-member panel to reach a collective verdict. "Judging by cases similar to fraud cases, I think we're probably into the final stages of getting a decision," Maguire added.
"Part of the challenge is that because there are three very senior people making that final judgement, getting those three together at the same time is actually very difficult and that has delayed the case. It should be resolved in the next few months, but we've said this before. There's an awful lot of evidence to go through and the charges are very, very serious, so you've got to have enough evidence."
