Matty Cash Dismisses Fatigue Concerns for Aston Villa's Final Push
Aston Villa defender Matty Cash has emphasised that the squad cannot afford to complain about tiredness as they aim for a spectacular end to the season across two major competitions. With just six weeks remaining, Unai Emery's team is targeting glory in both the Europa League and the Premier League, setting up a demanding schedule that requires peak performance.
Villa's Busy Schedule and European Ambitions
The club returns to training at Bodymoor Heath on Tuesday to prepare for a crucial Europa League quarter-final second leg against Bologna on Thursday. Villa holds a commanding 3-1 lead from the first leg, putting them in a strong position to reach the semi-finals for the second time in three seasons. This European campaign adds to an already packed fixture list, with the team also battling for a top-five finish in the Premier League to secure Champions League football next year.
If Villa advances on Thursday, they will have played at least 55 matches for the third consecutive season, highlighting the physical demands on the players. However, Cash stressed that the importance of their objectives should override any feelings of fatigue. He stated, "This part of the season, when you're fighting for such a big achievement, we've got such important games, you haven't got time to think and to have excuses for feeling leggy." He acknowledged that tiredness is natural but added, "We've got such a big goal to achieve, so we're trying to not let that get in the way."
Premier League Battle and Upcoming Fixtures
In the Premier League, Villa currently sits in fourth place, seven points ahead of fifth-placed Chelsea. Their next domestic match is at home against Sunderland on Sunday, a key fixture in maintaining their position. Cash highlighted the competitive nature of the league, noting, "We've got a lot of teams around that are in good form, fantastic players, big budgets, so it's going to be a fight right until the end." He mentioned rivals like Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester United, all vying for top spots, and emphasised the need for focus: "We're going to obviously stay focused, go right to the wire, keep picking up as many points as we can, and see where it leaves us."
As the season reaches its climax, Villa's ability to manage fatigue and maintain performance will be critical to achieving their dual ambitions. With high-stakes matches ahead, the team's resilience and determination, as voiced by Cash, will be tested in the coming weeks.
