John McGinn Lauds Jadon Sancho After Aston Villa's Europa League Triumph
Aston Villa captain John McGinn has singled out Jadon Sancho as the undisputed man of the match following Villa's 2-0 victory over Lille in the Europa League round of 16 second leg. The skipper's high praise comes after Sancho delivered a pivotal performance, assisting McGinn's goal and nearly scoring himself in a crucial European clash.
Sancho's Standout Display in Villa's Quarter-Final Qualification
On loan from Manchester United this season, Sancho has faced challenges adapting under manager Unai Emery, but he shone brightly on Thursday night. Breaking the deadlock just before the hour mark, Sancho provided the assist for McGinn's opener, then came agonizingly close to scoring when his effort rattled the post. Ollie Watkins later set up Leon Bailey to secure Villa's lead, ensuring their progression to the quarter-finals.
Speaking to TNT after the match, McGinn expressed his delight, stating, "It was a slow first half, personally as well trying to get back up to speed. It wasn't a pretty performance but the main thing is we are in the quarter-final." He specifically highlighted Sancho's contribution, adding, "It was his best in a Villa shirt. He was man of the match tonight by a mile. The manager was giving me grief before the game to make sure I get in the box and he gave it to me."
McGinn's Recovery and Team Strategy Insights
McGinn also discussed his return from a knee injury, emphasizing the importance of proper rehabilitation. "It is difficult when the team is not doing well and you're in the physio room," he said. "I got over it pretty quickly, I knew it could have been more serious and I just wanted to do my rehab properly. I've made mistakes before, trying to cut corners with rehab but I didn't do that this time."
Reflecting on the tactical adjustments, McGinn noted, "They defended very well in the first half but we did go a bit more direct in the second half, the manager tweaked it and it paid dividends." He also shared his personal goals, saying, "I never used to set goal targets but the manager sets targets on the forward players. I want to try to target 10 goals every season, I've not managed to do that yet but hopefully this season is the year. It is up to us forward players and wide players to take the pressure off Ollie [Watkins]."
This victory marks a significant achievement for Aston Villa as they advance in European competition, with Sancho's resurgence being a key talking point among fans and analysts alike.
