Ipswich Manager McKenna Points to 'Silver Lining' Before Birmingham City Battle
Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna has identified a significant advantage for his team ahead of their crucial Championship encounter with Birmingham City on Easter Monday. The Tractor Boys' scheduled match against Southampton on Good Friday was postponed, giving McKenna's promotion-chasing squad valuable extra preparation time.
Fresh Squad Ready for Portman Road Showdown
While Birmingham City arrive at Portman Road following a demanding defeat to Blackburn Rovers on Friday, Ipswich will be well-rested and prepared for the 3pm kickoff. The postponement occurred because Southampton were involved in FA Cup quarter-final action, where they secured a 2-1 victory over Arsenal to advance to the semi-finals at Wembley.
This extended break has allowed McKenna to conduct comprehensive training sessions with his entire squad over the weekend. Several key players who returned late from international duty have now had crucial time to reintegrate, while some injured players have improved their chances of being available for selection.
McKenna Embraces Unexpected Advantage
"I think we take the silver lining, which is the fact that the players who have been away on internationals will at least have had a couple of days back training here with the group," McKenna told the East Anglian Daily Times.
The manager specifically mentioned international players Dara O'Shea, Jack Taylor, Anis Mehmeti, George Hirst, and Elkan Baggott benefiting from the additional training time. Furthermore, McKenna noted that "the extra couple of days maybe brings one or two players who have injuries back into contention," referring to Wes Burns and Marcelino Nunez.
"So we'll take the hand that we've been dealt," McKenna concluded, emphasizing his team's readiness to capitalize on their unexpected preparation advantage.
Diverging Championship Campaigns
The two teams began their seasons with a 1-1 draw at St Andrew's @ Knighthead Park on the opening day, but their campaigns have since taken dramatically different paths. While Ipswich Town remain firmly in the promotion race that both clubs initially targeted, Birmingham City have experienced a significant downturn in form.
Blues are currently drifting toward a mid-table finish after suffering five defeats in their last seven matches. This contrast in momentum adds another layer of intrigue to Monday's encounter, with Ipswich looking to maintain their promotion push while Birmingham seek to reverse their recent struggles.
The stage is set for a compelling Championship battle at Portman Road, where McKenna's well-prepared Ipswich side will face a Birmingham team determined to overcome their recent challenges and disrupt the promotion aspirations of their hosts.
