Michael O'Neill Responds to Player Minutes Concerns Ahead of Friendly
Northern Ireland and Blackburn Rovers manager Michael O'Neill has addressed theories about player minutes in the upcoming friendly against Wales, with an eye on critical end-of-season club fixtures in the EFL Championship.
Balancing International and Club Commitments
O'Neill was questioned about potential conflicts of interest, as Northern Ireland prepares to face Wales in Cardiff on Tuesday night. Both teams suffered defeats in World Cup play-offs recently, with Northern Ireland losing to Italy and Wales to Bosnia-Herzegovina.
O'Neill stated, "We're not in charge of the schedule of the games for either the international window or the EFL. I think 80 per cent of my squad play in the EFL." He emphasized that while mindful of club situations, Northern Ireland will not be reckless with players.
Focus on Key Players and Club Battles
Albion's Isaac Price, a key player for both Northern Ireland and his club, is at the center of attention. Price has been influential under manager James Morrison, with Albion fighting relegation in the Championship. Blackburn, managed by O'Neill, are currently 19th, just one place above Albion on goal difference.
O'Neill added that EFL players are robust and accustomed to regular football, saying, "The lads who play in the EFL, they play a lot of football and they're used to playing regular football. So they've got resilience and I'm sure they'll get through the game fine."
Recent Form and International Action
Price, 22, started the season strongly but faced form struggles before recently emerging as a key player from the left flank. In March, he created 12 goalscoring opportunities, tying with Ipswich's Leif Davis for the most in the Championship.
Four Northern Ireland squad members have returned to their clubs post-World Cup play-off, and Albion is monitoring all international players, including potential features for Jayson Molumby, Ousmane Diakite, and Wales under-21 duo Ollie Bostock and Alex Williams.
