Pau Torres Drops Contract Statement on Future at Aston Villa
Aston Villa's defender Pau Torres has openly discussed his future with the club, revealing he is content to remain until his contract expires in 2028. The Spanish centre-back highlighted the club's familial atmosphere and competitive goals as major reasons for his satisfaction.
Spanish Influence Creates Home Away from Home
Torres, who joined Villa in the summer of 2023, emphasized how the significant Spanish presence at the club makes it feel like a home away from home. He noted Spaniards in key roles, including CEO Damian Vidagany, analysts, assistants to manager Unai Emery, gym staff, and physiotherapists.
"It makes you feel a bit at home, even though you're far away," Torres said. "They're doing an exceptional job across the board, day in and day out."
Key Role in Villa's Progress Under Emery
Since his arrival, Torres has been instrumental in Aston Villa's development under Unai Emery. The club recently advanced to its third European quarter-final in as many seasons, defeating Lille in the Europa League. Torres made his 100th appearance for Villa in a 2-0 win over West Ham before the March international break.
He expressed gratitude for joining the Premier League under Emery, who knew his playing style well. "I'm convinced it was the right decision," Torres stated. "We've managed to play in Europe all these years, compete on equal terms with any team, and I think we have a very good club."
Family and Club Stability Reinforce Commitment
Torres is settled in Birmingham with his young family, adding to his happiness at the club. "Yes, I'm fine. My family is doing well there. The club is doing well and growing," he responded when asked about his contentment.
He outlined his plans to continue playing in the Premier League and Europe, aiming for consistency. "We're achieving good things, and that's the plan. To keep playing in the Premier League, to keep playing in Europe. I think it's something that brings me positive things, and I see myself there until the end of my contract."
Ambitions for Silverware and Champions League Qualification
Aston Villa are targeting Europa League success this season while striving to maintain a top-five position in the Premier League, which would secure a return to the Champions League. Torres highlighted the financial strength and consistency of the club as factors in their competitiveness.
"For us, if we finish the season and qualify for the Champions League through the league, it's a very positive thing," he said. "It's historic for them to qualify for the Champions League because they haven't played in this competition for 40 years, and if we manage to qualify again in these four years we've been there, it will be a very positive thing."
With a core group of players and effective integration of new signings, Villa aims to compete against top teams and achieve historic milestones under Emery's leadership.
