Special permission granted for late opening
The UK Government has granted special permission for pubs in England and Wales to stay open until 5am for England's World Cup round of 16 match against Mexico. The match kicks off at 1am on Monday, July 6, 2026.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced the decision on Thursday, July 2, allowing licensed premises to extend their hours to accommodate fans watching the early morning fixture.
Wetherspoons and Greene King venues confirmed
Several pub chains have confirmed they will open for the match. Wetherspoons' Soloman Cutler in Birmingham will be open. Greene King has announced a list of participating venues across the West Midlands, including the Baldwin Arms in Birmingham, Bear Tavern in Smethwick, and the Bradmore Arms in Wolverhampton.
Other Greene King pubs opening include the Cat & Fiddle in Great Barr, Corn Exchange in Brierley Hill, Four Oaks in Sutton Coldfield, Gatehouse in Wolverhampton, Keymaster in Willenhall, Lutley Oak in Halesowen, Nickelodeon in Wednesfield, Rose & Crown in Coventry, Signal Box in Coventry, Talbot in Worcester, Wheatsheaf in Great Wyrley, and White Horse in Sutton Coldfield.
Impact on fans
This special dispensation allows fans to gather and watch the match in pubs rather than at home, boosting social interaction and local business. The early kick-off time, 1am, is unusual for a World Cup match in the UK, but the government's decision ensures supporters can enjoy the game in a communal setting.
According to the British Beer and Pub Association, the extension is expected to increase pub revenues significantly during what is typically a quiet period. Fans are advised to check with their local pubs for specific opening times and any booking requirements.
