Fourth Annual Run for Redfern Memorial 5K Set for March 8 in Leicester
The Adam Redfern Memorial Fund is extending a heartfelt invitation to the local community to participate in the fourth annual Run for Redfern event. This meaningful occasion serves to honor the memory of Adam Redfern, a dedicated De Montfort University (DMU) graduate and staff member who was widely regarded as embodying the very best qualities of the institution. Tragically, Adam passed away from a cardiac arrest while jogging in March 2021 at the young age of 28, leaving a profound impact on all who knew him.
Event Details and New Accessible Route
Scheduled for March 8, this year's 5K run marks the poignant fifth anniversary of Adam's passing. The event will commence at 11am from the DMU Campus Centre, with participants encouraged to arrive by 10.45am to observe a minute's silence at 10.55am before the race begins. In a significant update for 2026, the event features a brand-new route that is largely flat and meticulously designed to be accessible for both runners and walkers of all abilities. Following an impressive turnout of over 150 participants last year, Adam's parents are hopeful that this year's event will attract the largest attendance yet, further amplifying the fund's mission.
Remembering Adam's Legacy and Community Spirit
Adam's father, Ian Redfern, fondly recalls his son's deep affection for Leicester and his unwavering commitment to staying active through sports. "Adam loved his time in Leicester, both as a student and later a member of staff. He was so passionate about sport, and the Run for Redfern is a wonderful way for people to come together, stay active, and honor his legacy," Ian shared. The memorial fund was originally established by Adam's friends to preserve his memory and raise crucial awareness for cardiac health. Today, the charity provides vital financial support to students who share Adam's passions while actively promoting heart health education through various initiatives.
Encouraging Broad Participation and Support
Ian Redfern is urging everyone to join the event, emphasizing inclusivity regardless of fitness level. "I'd encourage everyone – whether you're a seasoned runner or just want to walk the route with friends – to join us next Sunday. Every step taken helps us continue Adam's legacy and support causes that were close to his heart," he added. Tickets for the in-person event in Leicester are available for £6 through the De Montfort Students Union website. For those unable to attend in person, virtual tickets are also offered, allowing supporters to complete their 5K from any location, ensuring widespread participation and continued support for this heartfelt cause.
