Scottish Pair Narrowly Defeated at Prestigious Birmingham Badminton Tournament

Scottish mixed doubles duo Alexander Dunn and Julie MacPherson experienced a narrow defeat at the prestigious YONEX All England 2026 badminton championships held in Birmingham. Despite entering the match with confidence after a previous victory, the pair fell to defending champions Guo Xin Wa and Chen Fang Hui of China with scores of 21-19, 21-19 in the second round.

Confidence Turned to Frustration in Close Contest

Alexander Dunn, hailing from Bellshill, expressed that the team approached the match with belief, having defeated the same opponents just a week earlier. "We played them last week and fortunately got the better of them, so we came in quite confident," Dunn stated. However, the Chinese pair adjusted their strategy, gaining an early advantage that forced the Scots to adapt.

"They came out and had changed their game plan a little bit, were a little bit more fired up," Dunn explained, highlighting the tactical shift. The match remained intensely competitive, with Dunn noting that "just a couple of loose shots, maybe centimetres out, that was the difference, particularly at 19-19, it is a bit frustrating."

Dramatic Comebacks and Crowd Support

In the opening game, Dunn and MacPherson faced a six-point deficit but mounted an impressive comeback, scoring five consecutive points to briefly lead. Despite their efforts, Guo and Chen secured crucial points to close out the first set. The second set was even tighter, with neither team establishing a significant lead until the final moments.

Julie MacPherson, from Edinburgh, reflected on the contrast between matches: "We obviously started last week’s match really strong whereas they started today’s match really strong, so we did well to claw it back in the first set and get it back to 19-all." She acknowledged the heightened stakes, adding, "It is a more prestigious tournament, they wanted to play well."

Entertaining Moments and Home Advantage

The match featured a memorable moment when Dunn attempted a creative shot through his legs during a rally where both Chinese players were on the floor, delighting the Birmingham crowd. "I hit it through my legs, which is quite bad, I really should just have my racquet in front," Dunn joked. He praised the atmosphere, saying, "The crowd was class. We had a few good rallies in general, and a few of Julie’s shots were incredible, and I actually just came away smiling, I was really pleased."

Despite the loss, both players appreciated the support and expressed disappointment at not forcing a deciding set. Dunn emphasized, "We really felt the crowd, and we were gutted we couldn’t take it to a third set at least and give them something to cheer and having that home advantage in the third set might have made the difference."

The YONEX All England Open Badminton Championships remains a premier event in the sport, attracting top talent and enthusiastic spectators to Birmingham each year.
