Wales Unites Against Cancer with New Swimming Challenge
Swim Challenge to Fight Cancer in Wales

The people of Wales are being encouraged to don their swimming gear and dive into a unique fundraising initiative designed to combat cancer across the nation. A new partnership between Swim Wales, the national governing body for aquatics, and Cancer Research Wales, the independent Welsh cancer research charity celebrating its 60th anniversary, has launched the 'Dip or Distance: The Cancer Research Wales swimming challenge'.

A Flexible Fundraising Initiative for 2026

This all-new challenge, scheduled for 2026, offers participants a choice between two engaging activities. Individuals can opt to swim a long distance of their choosing at their local swimming pool, providing a flexible and accessible option for many. Alternatively, for those seeking an adventurous thrill, there is the opportunity to brave a supervised cold-water dip. This exciting event will be held at the accredited Lisvane and Llanishen Reservoirs in Cardiff on Saturday, March 28, 2026.

Official Statements from the Organisers

Fergus Feeney, Chief Executive Officer of Swim Wales, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating: "We are delighted to partner with Cancer Research Wales in this new initiative. The Dip or Distance challenge gives people across Wales a fun and flexible way to get involved with swimming and raise vital funds for a worthy cause."

He further elaborated on the inclusivity of the event, noting: "It is really exciting to see a challenge that can be tailored to each individual, whether that’s pushing yourself in the pool or trying something new with a supervised cold-water dip. Whatever participants choose, we encourage everyone to take part safely, within their abilities, and to enjoy being active in the water."

Adam Fletcher, Chief Executive of Cancer Research Wales, commented on the partnership's significance: "It’s a privilege to be partnering with Swim Wales to promote Dip or Distance to encourage swimmers of all ages and abilities across Wales and experienced or first-time cold-water dippers to get involved with this campaign."

Testing the Waters for a New Tradition

Fletcher highlighted the pioneering nature of the event, explaining: "This year, we are quite literally 'testing the waters' with our first ever Dip or Distance, which is also Cancer Research Wales’s first swimming challenge. We hope it will prove popular with our existing and new supporters and grow to become a major part of the swimming calendar in Wales over the years."

He concluded with a heartfelt appeal: "Please support Dip or Distance and help us fundraise so that we can bring better treatments and hope closer to home for cancer patients across Wales, their families and loved ones."

Getting Involved in the Challenge

The initiative aims to unite communities through aquatic activities, promoting health and wellness while generating crucial funds for cancer research. Participants are invited to join this collective effort to make a tangible difference in the fight against cancer, with options suitable for various skill levels and preferences.
