Wolves Manager Commends Player Character in Chelsea Setback
Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Rob Edwards has singled out two players for demonstrating significant character during the team's recent Premier League defeat to Chelsea. Despite a challenging 3-1 loss at Molineux, Edwards emphasised the positive response from his squad in the second half, particularly praising new signings Adam Armstrong and Angel Gomes.
Difficult Afternoon at Molineux
The match proved to be a stern test for Wolves, who suffered their nineteenth league defeat of the season. Chelsea's Cole Palmer dominated the first half, securing a hat-trick within thirty-eight minutes through two penalties and a well-taken finish from Marc Cucurella's cross. This early onslaught left Wolves facing a substantial deficit and the prospect of a heavy defeat.
Edwards expressed his frustration with the initial period, stating to the club's official media: "My hand is feeling the effects of thumping a door with a bit of anger. We started really positively, and it was a real promising start, and then after a couple of ludicrous mistakes, against a top team with brilliant players, it's going to be a really difficult day for us."
Second Half Resilience Provides Positives
Following the interval, Wolves displayed improved organisation and fight. The team managed to score a consolation goal when Tolu Arokodare converted from close range after an assist from debutant Adam Armstrong. This contribution meant Armstrong matched the assist tally of the departed Jorgen Strand Larsen in a single appearance.
Edwards was keen to highlight the collective response: "I thought the players reacted very, very well, once we were able to get them in at half-time and organise things. It was about trying to win the half... showing some passion and make sure we fight, and we did that. It wasn't a team that went under in the end."
New Signings Impress on Debut
Special praise was reserved for the two debutants. Adam Armstrong, making his first appearance, provided the assist for Wolves' goal. Angel Gomes, joining on loan from Marseille with an option to buy, also made his bow in midfield.
Edwards elaborated on their performances: "I thought they were real positives today. They played really well and made a very good first impression in front of the home supporters... in tough conditions as well, actual weather conditions, and in the way the game went. They stood up to things and showed a lot of character... both played very well."
The result leaves Wolves eighteen points from safety, with relegation to the Championship appearing increasingly likely. The team now faces a crucial fixture against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground, where they will aim to secure vital points to avoid an unwanted historical record.
