Wolves Women Boss Reveals Heartbreak Over Promotion Controversy in New Documentary
A new documentary has been released, shedding light on the emotional turmoil faced by Wolves Women following a controversial promotion bid failure. Titled 'Wolves Women: Old Gold, New Dawn', the film delves into the aftermath of a decision that left the team and its manager devastated.
Manager's Emotional Response
Wolves Women manager Dan McNamara has opened up about the incident, revealing he was brought to tears upon learning that the club had not applied for a Tier 2 licence last summer. This meant that even if the team had secured promotion on the final day of the season, they would not have been eligible to move up to the second tier.
McNamara said: "What happened in the summer was probably one of the most devastating things that's happened to me as an individual, and us as a group. When I was told that we hadn't put the bid in, I really questioned what I was going to do with that information – I was in tears. It was devastating to hear."
He described the situation as akin to rebuilding a burnt-down house, noting that it took convincing senior players to stay committed to the project. McNamara admitted he nearly left the club, having attended job interviews and received offers, but ultimately chose to stay because "it wasn't Wolves" elsewhere.
Player Perspectives and Fallout
The documentary features interviews with key figures, including player Beth Merrick, who was highly critical of the club on social media when the news broke in 2025. Merrick recounted the somber mood in the changing room after the final game, where players learned about the failed bid.
Merrick explained: "The way we heard about the bid not being put in was on the final day of the season. We'd pushed it to the final day with a very small glimmer of hope... People were ultimately playing under a false pretence."
Other interviewees include captain Anna Morphet, technical director Matt Jackson, and Wolves Women chairman Jenny Wilkes. The film explores how the club has learned from last year's mistake and is working to improve the women's side, with the team now in contention for promotion this season through a WSL expansion play-off.
Moving Forward and Club Support
Matt Jackson emphasized the significance of this year's application, stating: "This application was really significant for us, after the difficulties of last year. We had to deal with a lot of fallout. Quite rightly, a lot of the women's team felt bruised by it, but we've come out of it with a really strong relationship, with the full backing of the ownership and board here."
He added that the women's team has the club's full support as they face upcoming challenges. Directed by Jack Otter and driven by broadcaster Lynsey Hooper, the documentary is available on Wolves TV and YouTube, offering an in-depth look at the team's resilience and future prospects.
