The unwavering dedication of local sporting heroes was celebrated in style at the Sport Caerphilly Sport Awards 2025, held at the Bryn Meadows venue. This annual gathering united sports clubs, dedicated volunteers, and community figures to honour those making a remarkable impact on grassroots sport throughout the Caerphilly county borough.
Celebrating Excellence in Community Sport
Organised by Sport Caerphilly, the evening served as a powerful tribute to the individuals and organisations whose passion and commitment are fundamental to strengthening community sport and inspiring participation for all. The event highlighted the profound effect that local champions have on fostering an active and inclusive community.
The 2025 Award Winners
The ceremony saw a host of deserving winners take to the stage. Ioan Walters of Wattsville FC was named the Aaron Ramsey Young Volunteer of the Year, while Lee Couzens from Caerphilly Tennis Club received the Welsh Sport Association Volunteer of the Year award.
The Phylyp Butler Memorial Cup Inclusive Award was presented to Julie Proctor of the Dragonflies Trampoline Club, recognising her work in making sport accessible to all. Michaela Pine from Caerphilly Junior Netball Club was honoured as the Dragons RFC Community Coach of the Year.
In a celebration of long-term commitment, the prestigious Caerphilly County Borough Council Lifetime Achievement to Sport award was jointly given to Alison Dacey of Ystrad Mynach Netball Club and Karen Williams of Caerphilly Junior Netball Club. The Sue Noake Hockey Club was crowned the Langstone Safety & Workwear Club of the Year.
A Night of Inspirational Figures
The event was further elevated by a special induction into the Team Caerphilly Sports Wall of Fame. Rugby legend Steve Fenwick, a former British and Irish Lions and Wales international, was honoured for his outstanding contribution to Welsh rugby. His legacy continues to motivate players and fans across the region.
Adding to the inspirational tone of the evening, Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, one of Britain's most celebrated Paralympians and a leading voice for inclusion and equality in sport, delivered a powerful address to the audience.
Councillor Chris Morgan, Cabinet Member for Leisure, praised the award recipients, stating, “These awards shine a spotlight on the incredible people and clubs that make our communities stronger through sport.” He added, “Their dedication, leadership and passion ensure that opportunities to be active are open to everyone across Caerphilly.”
The awards are a key part of the broader Sport and Active Recreation Strategy 2019-2029, underlining a sustained commitment to promoting physical activity, wellbeing, participation, and inclusion across the entire borough.
