Cheshire College Student Crowned UK's Strongest College Athlete in National Competition
A student from Cheshire College – South & West has been officially recognized as the United Kingdom's strongest college athlete following an impressive and dominant performance in a national strength competition organized by AoC Sport. Troy, who is currently studying at the College's Ellesmere Port campus, secured this prestigious title at The Strongest 2026 event, which is a nationwide contest specifically designed to identify and celebrate the most powerful student athletes across the further education sector.
National Competition Details and Initial Stages
The competition, which ran from October 2025 through to March 2026, attracted a significant number of entrants from colleges across the entire United Kingdom. In the opening stage, all competitors were required to submit their one-repetition maximum lifts in two key exercises: the deadlift and the overhead push press. The highest performers from this initial phase then progressed to a live final, which was hosted at Runshaw College.
A notable number of Cheshire College students successfully advanced through these initial stages, clearly demonstrating the exceptional strength and depth of talent within the college's comprehensive sport provision. These students then went on to compete against the country's very best athletes at the highly anticipated final event.
Grueling Final Challenges and Outstanding Performance
All finalists faced a series of grueling strongman-style challenges that were designed to test not only raw strength but also endurance and mental resilience. The challenges included:
- The Axle Deadlift for Reps
- Log Press for Reps
- Sandbag to Shoulder
- A combined Farmers Walk into Yoke Walk
Troy excelled throughout these demanding finals, particularly in the deadlift event where he completed an impressive 16 repetitions of a 210kg deadlift. This performance out-lifted the second-place competitor by a remarkable eight repetitions, ultimately leading to his crowning as AoC Sport's Strongest 2026 champion.
Reactions and Testimonials from the Winner and College Officials
Speaking after his well-deserved victory, Troy expressed his gratitude and confidence, stating: "I just went in there knowing I was going to win, and I did win with all the support of my friends and teachers. If it wasn't because of them, victory wouldn't have been possible, so I am forever thankful for their unwavering support."
Ruth Szolkowska, vice principal for innovation, curriculum and quality at Cheshire College, added her congratulations and pride, saying: "We are immensely proud of Troy's outstanding achievement, as well as the efforts of all our students who competed in this year's competition. To have multiple students reach and perform at this exceptionally high level is a true testament to their unwavering commitment and the overall strength of our sport programmes. Troy's performance in the final was nothing short of outstanding and clearly shows what can be achieved through hard work, focus, and sheer determination."
