Birmingham City have secured the signing of proven Championship centre-back Dael Fry on a free transfer, beating off intense competition from several promotion-chasing clubs. The 28-year-old former Middlesbrough captain has signed a three-year contract at St Andrew's, becoming the club's second summer signing following the £6 million capture of Jhon Solis.
Fry Rejects New Boro Deal and Rivals
Fry turned down a new contract with his boyhood club Middlesbrough and shunned interest from Championship promotion hopefuls West Ham and Wrexham to join Blues. He captained Boro to the Championship play-off final last season under manager Kim Hellberg, starting 34 games across all competitions and scoring three goals, including a header in Boro's 2-1 win over Blues at The Riverside in November.
Since making his first-team debut for Middlesbrough in 2015 under former Blues boss Aitor Karanka, Fry has established himself as one of the Championship's most reliable centre-backs. Including a brief loan spell at Rotherham United, he has started 248 Championship games, showcasing durability and consistency.
Strengthening Blues' Defence
Fry's arrival bolsters Birmingham's central defensive options, which already include captain Christoph Klarer, Phil Neumann, and Jack Robinson. The 6ft 4in defender is right-footed but has played the majority of his football for Boro on the left side, a position Blues manager Chris Davies has sought to strengthen in the past two transfer windows.
According to Birmingham City reporter Alex Dicken, Fry not only fulfills a positional need but also brings invaluable Championship experience and leadership skills, having captained Middlesbrough in recent seasons. The defender proved his fitness after an injury-hit 2024/25 campaign by playing 34 games last term.
Impact on Blues' Promotion Ambitions
Fry's capture is a significant statement of intent from Birmingham City as they aim to challenge for promotion. The club has been active in the transfer market, and the addition of a player of Fry's calibre on a free transfer represents excellent business. With his experience and leadership, Fry is expected to play a key role in Davies' defensive setup for the upcoming season.
