£456k 3G Pitch Upgrade for Caldicot Leisure Centre to Boost Community Sport
Caldicot's £456k 3G Pitch Upgrade to Start in January

Monmouthshire County Council has unveiled a major investment to transform sporting facilities in Caldicot, with a significant upgrade to the all-weather pitch at the town's leisure centre.

A Major Investment in Grassroots Sport

The council confirmed that the existing 2G synthetic surface will be completely replaced with a modern, FAW and FIFA-approved 3G pitch. This upgrade promises a safer, more durable, and higher-quality playing experience for the entire community, including local schools, football clubs, and residents.

The project, with a total value of £456,000, has been made possible through collaborative funding. Key partners include the Cymru Football Foundation, which contributed £206,000 from its Fit-For-Future Facilities Programme, and Sport Wales, which provided a £150,000 Capital Grant. Additional contributions came from the education sector.

Timeline and Community Access

Construction on the new facility is scheduled to begin in January 2026, with a target completion date set for April 2026. The development secured funding by demonstrating a clear need from both schools and the community, guaranteeing public access outside of school hours, and meeting the strict technical standards for 3G pitches.

Councillor Angela Sandles, the council's Cabinet Member for Equalities and Engagement, emphasised the project's wide-reaching benefits. "These upgraded facilities will be a huge boost to the town and beyond," she said. "The new pitch will be available for school pupils during curriculum hours, local football clubs and teams, community sports groups, and members of the public. It will also enable increased participation for women and girls in a variety of sports."

A Collaborative Effort for Local Football

Aled Lewis, Director at the Cymru Football Foundation, highlighted the importance of collaboration. "The Cymru Football Foundation is committed to investing in facilities that inspire communities," he stated. "This project at Caldicot Leisure Centre will be essential for the growth of football in the local area. A huge thank you to our partners U.K Government and Sport Wales."

The council will provide regular updates on the project's progress through a dedicated webpage and its social media channels. Residents can follow developments online at www.monlife.co.uk/caldicot-leisure-centre-development/.
