Birmingham MMA Fighter Summer Onley Targets UFC After Career Change
Birmingham MMA Fighter Summer Onley Targets UFC Contract

From Graphic Design to Cage Fighting: Summer Onley's Remarkable Journey

Summer Onley has undergone a dramatic career transformation, swapping a decade-long role as a graphic designer for the intense world of mixed martial arts. Known in the MMA community as Ice Cold, this Birmingham-based fighter has compiled an impressive undefeated record of six wins, all by technical knockout.

Targeting the Ultimate Fighting Championship

With her flawless professional record, Onley has set her sights on the pinnacle of mixed martial arts competition: the Ultimate Fighting Championship. She recently captured the Full Contact Contender Bantamweight title with a dominant first-round TKO victory, strengthening her case for a UFC opportunity.

"The next step for me is to hopefully get into the UFC," Onley declared. "I have six wins, all TKOs. No other girl is doing that outside the UFC, so Dana White, give me a contract."

A Birmingham Tradition of Excellence

Onley follows in the footsteps of Birmingham's strong MMA tradition, most notably UFC world champion Leon Edwards. She trains at Ronin MMA Gym in Birmingham, where she has found not just training partners but what she describes as family.

"I am very shy. Through martial arts, I have become more confident, and that is because of the guys here," she explained. "They are not my friends, they are my family. I spend more time here than I do at my job or my house."

Inspiring the Next Generation of Female Fighters

Beyond her own competitive ambitions, Onley is passionate about encouraging more women to participate in martial arts. Currently training primarily with male partners, she actively welcomes more female participation in the sport.

"When a girl comes into a gym for the first time, it is a little bit intimidating," she acknowledged. "Ninety percent of my training partners are men - even higher sometimes. When I do get the chance to train with females it is amazing. We understand ourselves a bit better - it is nice to have that community."

From Spectator to Competitor

Onley's journey into MMA began unexpectedly when her boyfriend introduced her to the sport. "I had no idea what MMA was. I had no idea what ju jitsu or wrestling was," she recalled. "When I met my boyfriend, he introduced me to the UFC and I thought 'well, this is pretty cool'. I like that."

After attending a friend's fight and witnessing women's competition, she became determined to try it herself. "I thought, 'I reckon I could do that'," she said. "When we got back, I was begging and begging my coach for three months to have a fight."

Since her first fight in November 2019, Onley has never looked back, transitioning from creating digital designs to delivering powerful strikes in the cage.

A Broad Appeal for Martial Arts

Onley emphasizes that martial arts offers something for everyone, regardless of competitive aspirations. "I am hoping that my journey can inspire other girls to take it up - even if they don't want to fight," she said. "Martial arts is so broad - there are so many things you can do - you are going to find something that you like, even if it is just hitting pads for self-defence reasons."

She expressed particular excitement about seeing younger female fighters develop their skills. "There are young girls coming through. I hope to see them get to the UFC and do even better than I have done."

Summer Onley's story represents more than just a career change - it's a testament to personal transformation through sport and a call to action for greater female participation in martial arts. From designing graphics to pursuing championship glory, her journey continues to inspire both inside and outside the cage.
