Stourbridge Girl with Cerebral Palsy Extends Special Invitation to Football Star Jack Grealish

A nine-year-old girl from Stourbridge, who lives with both cerebral palsy and a potentially fatal brain condition, has penned a heartfelt invitation to her football hero Jack Grealish for her upcoming surprise birthday party. Sophie Birkin, a devoted Manchester City fan, dreams of meeting the Birmingham-born footballer, currently on loan at Everton, as her mother Sarah Foley seeks to create a memorable moment for her resilient daughter.

Living with Hydrocephalus and Cerebral Palsy

Sophie was diagnosed with hydrocephalus at just ten weeks old, a condition involving fluid buildup in the brain that can be fatal if left untreated, according to NHS guidelines. She also has cerebral palsy, which affects movement and coordination, sharing this condition with Jack Grealish's younger sister. Her mother Sarah describes their life as "living on a knife's edge," with a hospital bag always packed and ready for emergencies.

"She's had three brain surgeries already," Sarah explained. "There's the prospect that she's going to need more, and there's no way of knowing when. It could be tomorrow or ten years from now." The family faces constant uncertainty, with symptoms like headaches and sickness that could signal urgent medical needs.

A Dream Meeting with a Football Role Model

Sophie, who regularly plays football with the Comets Pan Disability & Autism Friendly Football group in Halesowen, has expressed her excitement at the possibility of meeting Grealish. Kissing her Jack Grealish shirt, she demonstrated how she would scream and give him a massive hug if they ever met face-to-face.

Sarah believes such a meeting would be incredibly meaningful, not just for the joy it would bring, but for the connection through shared experiences. "He might be able to advise her, and just her meeting him and knowing that he's got that knowledge and connection would be incredible," she said, referencing Grealish's personal understanding of cerebral palsy through his sister.

Creating Special Moments Amid Challenges

Sarah Foley is determined to brighten her daughter's life despite the ongoing medical challenges. "I want to make things happen for Sophie. I can't do everything, but if I can give her these little moments and reach out to get the right people to help make those moments special, that's all I want," she shared emotionally.

She describes Sophie as a "fighter" who faces every obstacle with resilience and often a smile, though Sarah acknowledges the daily struggles her daughter endures behind the scenes. The invitation to Jack Grealish represents more than just a birthday wish; it's an opportunity for inspiration and connection with a role model who understands some of the barriers Sophie faces.

Sarah's message to the footballer is heartfelt: "Give Sophie some time of day. She is an incredible little girl, and I know that he would love her as much as everyone else that meets her. It would be so good to have a professional footballer, a role model, who's got background and experience in some of the barriers that Sophie's faced."

The family now hopes that Jack Grealish will respond to their invitation, creating what could be a life-changing moment for a young girl who dreams of becoming a professional footballer herself while navigating significant health challenges.
