Chris Davies challenges Bright Osayi-Samuel to claim Birmingham City spot
Davies issues challenge to out-of-favour Blues star

Birmingham City manager Chris Davies has issued a direct challenge to defender Bright Osayi-Samuel, urging the out-of-favour full-back to reclaim his position in the starting lineup.

Opportunity Knocks for Frozen-Out Defender

The former Fenerbahce player has found himself largely excluded from the first team since September, with Tomoki Iwata being preferred at right-back. Osayi-Samuel has started just one match for Birmingham City during this period, despite being an established international player.

Iwata's impressive form since switching to the defensive role has been a key factor in his selection, with his presence also allowing Tommy Doyle to flourish in midfield alongside Paik Seung-ho. However, the Japanese defender's suspension for Monday's Championship clash against Watford presents a crucial opening for Osayi-Samuel.

International Pedigree Meets Club Frustration

Davies acknowledged the 27-year-old's quality while emphasising the competitive nature of squad selection. "Bright has been brought in to be an important player for us," the Blues boss stated. "He made a good start then with injuries he found himself out of the team."

The manager explained how Iwata's unexpected emergence at right-back changed the dynamic: "Tomoki was moved to right-back because both right-backs were injured and Tomoki has been one of if not the best full-back in the league in that time, he's been exceptional."

Despite his limited club action, Osayi-Samuel continues to be selected for Nigeria and is expected to represent his country at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations. This international commitment could see him miss up to a month of Championship football if Nigeria progresses to the tournament final.

Squad Management and Future Prospects

Davies highlighted the importance of managing player expectations within a competitive squad environment. "That's the nature of being a footballer, you're not guaranteed to play. You've got to really go and make it happen," he remarked.

The Birmingham manager emphasised his communication approach with players: "I do my best to communicate with them all the time to explain my decision making around the team and their importance, where they can improve and what they're good at."

Davies pointed to Marc Leonard's example as someone who has remained a key squad member despite not always starting, illustrating that multiple players are crucial for success throughout a demanding Championship season.

With Iwata unavailable and Osayi-Samuel needing to impress before potential international duty, Monday's match against Watford represents a significant moment for the Nigerian defender to reignite his Birmingham City career.
