"If you discover that your flight has been cancelled, the first port of call is to contact the airline your flight is booked with," Harrington advises. "If you are already at the airport, head for the airline’s customer service desk to speak to a member of staff."
He acknowledges that many travellers will be in the same predicament, suggesting: "If you’re met with long queues, try using the airline’s app if they have one or ring the customer service team to find out about the next steps."
Rebooking and Alternative Travel Options
Harrington emphasizes that airlines are typically obligated to provide alternatives. "If your flight has been cancelled, in most cases, the airline will have to make an alternative plan for you," he states. When speaking with airline staff, passengers should inquire about rebooking on later flights or consider alternative routes, including flying to airports near their final destination.
"It’s important to understand that the airline can book you a flight through a different provider, so make them aware of this," Harrington adds, highlighting a key option for expedited travel.

Harrington stresses the importance of travel insurance, especially during such disruptions. "It’s vital that when you book a trip abroad, you purchase travel insurance to protect yourself from circumstances such as cancelled flights," he told Birmingham Live. Passengers should review their policies, as many cover costs for hotels, airport transfers, alternative flights, and meals during extended delays.
Additionally, travellers are encouraged to ask airlines about compensation vouchers, which are often provided to help with accommodation and food expenses when flights are cancelled.
