Final Flight Date Announced for Coventry Airport Before Permanent Closure
The specific date when the last flights will depart from Coventry Airport in the West Midlands has now been officially revealed, ahead of the facility's permanent closure later this year. This announcement follows the initial decision made in early December 2025 to shut down the airport in 2026.
Currently, Coventry Airport does not handle any scheduled passenger services, functioning primarily for charter flights and training operations. However, the site has a rich aviation history, including scheduled passenger flights in past decades.
Historical Operations and Passenger Services
In the 1980s, Hards Travel operated package holiday flights from Coventry to popular European destinations such as Spain, France, Italy, and Austria. Later, from 2004 to 2008, Thomsonfly provided scheduled passenger flights to various European locations.
Additionally, Wizz Air offered flights from Coventry Airport to Poland, specifically serving Gdańsk and Katowice. Although scheduled passenger flights ceased in 2008, the airport continued to be utilized for business and freight flights, maintaining some level of activity.
Community Reaction and Fond Memories
Many residents across the Midlands have expressed strong emotions regarding the airport's impending closure, sharing nostalgic memories of its operational days. On social media platforms like Facebook, users have voiced both anger and sadness over the news.
One user commented, "Such a shame. Spent many hours there over the years at airshows. Even flew from there on DC3 to flying legends." Another added, "Pity. It was great to fly from with commercial airlines. Did Rome, Pisa and Ireland several times." These posts highlight the personal connections and experiences tied to the airport.
Impact on Local Organizations and Future Plans
The closure will significantly affect several local entities, including flight schools, the Coventry Aeroplane Club, and the Nimrod Preservation group, all of which rely on the airport for their operations.
Looking ahead, the airport site is set to be transformed into a massive new development called Greenpower Park, a gigafactory that received planning permission back in 2022. This project represents a shift from aviation to green energy manufacturing in the region.
The final flights from Coventry Airport are scheduled to depart on May 9, 2026, marking the end of its aviation era and the beginning of a new chapter for the West Midlands area.
