Newcastle Airport Expands Cargo Capacity with Major Equipment Investment
Newcastle Airport Boosts Cargo Operations with New Equipment

Newcastle Airport Enhances Global Cargo Capabilities Through Strategic Expansion

Newcastle Airport has significantly bolstered its status as a premier logistics hub by expanding its cargo services to address increasing market demands. This development follows a substantial investment from the airport's on-site business partner, Samson Aviation, which has acquired a range of advanced equipment designed to streamline freight operations.

Advanced Equipment for Diverse Cargo Handling

The centerpiece of this upgrade is a main deck loader capable of managing both widebody and narrowbody passenger and cargo aircraft. This new machinery allows the airport to process larger and more specialized cargo items, including heavy machinery, aircraft components, and luxury vehicles, across a broader spectrum of aircraft types. The enhancement supports growth beyond the current annual throughput of 4,000 tonnes of cargo imported and exported for the region.

Global Connectivity and Operational Efficiency

Newcastle Airport facilitates global trade through its round-the-clock operations and robust transport links. Notably, Emirates' daily service to Dubai can transport up to 21 tonnes of cargo, carrying goods such as automotive parts and pharmaceuticals. From Dubai, freight can be routed to over 130 destinations worldwide, with Shanghai in China, Melbourne in Australia, and Johannesburg in South Africa being key export points for Newcastle.

The airport's freight village offers comprehensive processing facilities, enabling imported goods to clear customs swiftly before distribution across the UK and internationally.

Future Plans for Cargo Expansion

In its 2040 Masterplan, Newcastle Airport has outlined ambitious strategies to further develop its cargo operations. This includes the proposed construction of AirLink, a new 750,000-square-foot cargo hub that could generate thousands of jobs and contribute up to £165 million annually to the regional economy.

Leadership Perspectives on Growth

Leon McQuaid, Director of Aviation Development at Newcastle Airport, commented: "We are delighted to further strengthen Newcastle Airport's position as a leading cargo gateway with the addition of this new equipment. It significantly enhances our capability to handle a wider range of cargo and underlines our ability to support the growing number of businesses choosing the Airport for their import and export needs. Our continued investment in cargo infrastructure demonstrates a clear commitment to growth, and we welcome discussions with cargo or aviation-related businesses interested in investing in the region."

Paula Ives, General Manager at Samson Aviation, added: "The investment in new equipment reflects Samson Aviation's dedication to supporting Newcastle Airport's expanding cargo operations. It will create enhanced opportunities for businesses in the North East, across the UK, and globally to transport larger and more specialized cargo efficiently and connect with vital markets worldwide."
