Ryanair Announces Passport Rule Change for Dual Nationals
Ryanair is set to implement a significant passport rule change starting next Wednesday, February 25, 2026, which may allow dual nationals to board flights to the United Kingdom without presenting a British passport. This move by the Irish low-cost carrier aims to address concerns among UK dual nationals abroad who are anxious about new immigration regulations coming into effect.
New Immigration Rules and Ryanair's Response
Under the new rules from the Home Office, dual British citizens will be required to show either a valid British passport or a certificate of entitlement to the right of abode when traveling to the UK. However, Ryanair has stated that it will permit passengers to board if they can provide satisfactory proof of being a British national, an Irish national, or hold another status in the UK, such as an old stamp or vignette with indefinite leave to remain.
The airline clarified that acceptable proof includes a valid or expired British passport, as well as a certificate of entitlement to the right of abode. Ryanair emphasized that from February 25, airlines are mandated to check that passengers from non-visa countries eligible for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) possess one. If passengers do not have an ETA, Ryanair will verify any other document that may allow them entry into the UK.
Government Stance and Potential Impacts
The Home Office has issued a statement warning that without proper documentation, carriers cannot verify a passenger's British citizenship, which could lead to delays or refused boarding. A government briefing paper further explains that all British citizens have the right of abode in the UK, exempting them from immigration control, but they must demonstrate this right upon entry.
This rule change is part of broader efforts to streamline immigration checks and enhance border security. Ryanair's flexible approach is seen as a measure to mitigate disruptions for dual nationals, ensuring smoother travel experiences while complying with regulatory requirements.
Travelers are advised to check Ryanair's specific guidelines and ensure they carry appropriate documentation to avoid any issues when flying to the UK after the new rules take effect.
