Latvian Carrier Smartlynx Airlines Enters Administration Following Financial Struggles
Smartlynx Airlines, a Latvian-based aviation company with a history spanning more than thirty years, has officially collapsed into administration. The airline, which had been operational since its founding, leaves behind a substantial debt burden of £206 million, equivalent to approximately €240 million.
Financial Difficulties and Operational Cease
The company had been grappling with severe financial challenges since the autumn of 2025, ultimately leading to the decision to halt all operations on November 24, 2025. In addition to the massive debt, Smartlynx Airlines also owes unpaid taxes amounting to £433,000, or €500,000, to the Latvian government.
In a heartfelt statement released by the airline, the management expressed the gravity of the situation, noting that the move was not taken lightly. "This decision comes after a thorough assessment of our situation and long-term outlook," the statement read.
A Legacy of Resilience and Global Operations
Smartlynx Airlines began as a small Latvian airline with ambitious dreams and grew over 33 years into an international entity known for its resilience and adaptability. The carrier was particularly recognized for supplying aircraft to major European airlines, including EasyJet, which would apply their own branding to the otherwise unmarked planes provided by Smartlynx.
The airline's statement reflected on its journey, highlighting the dedication of its workforce. "SmartLynx has always been built by its people - passionate professionals from all corners of the world who took on every challenge with determination," it said.
Memorable Moments and Lasting Impact
Over three decades, Smartlynx Airlines created numerous unforgettable moments, including extensive flight operations across the globe, the opening of new bases, and the formation of diverse teams. The airline emphasized that these achievements, driven by thousands of dedicated colleagues, represent the true legacy of the company.
"Together, we filled the last three decades with moments that won't be forgotten: days and nights in the skies, flights all over the world, new bases opening, new teams forming, and lots of special stories," the statement continued. The airline extended its gratitude to teams, partners, clients, and friends for their support throughout its operational years.
The collapse of Smartlynx Airlines marks a significant event in the aviation industry, underscoring the financial pressures faced by carriers in the current economic climate.
