Teen Dies After E-Bike Hits Pelican Crossing Pole in Bilston

An 18-year-old has tragically died following an e-bike crash in Bilston, West Midlands. The incident occurred on Thursday evening, May 21, when the electric bike collided with a pelican crossing pole on High Street, near the Sir Henry Newbolt pub.

Emergency Response

Emergency services were dispatched to the scene shortly after 9:30 PM. Upon arrival, paramedics discovered one teenager in critical condition. He was immediately transported to Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. A second individual, a 14-year-old boy, sustained minor injuries but declined hospital treatment.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson stated: "On arrival, crews found an e-bike, with two passengers, had come off the road. One of them, a man, was in a critical condition. Ambulance staff immediately administered advanced life support before he was conveyed to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for further treatment. A second patient, with minor injuries, did not wish to go to hospital."

Police Investigation

When West Midlands Police arrived at the scene, the e-bike was no longer present. Authorities are now appealing for information to locate the vehicle and establish the full circumstances of the collision. A police spokesperson commented: "A man has tragically died following a collision on Bilston High Street last night. An electric bike hit a pelican crossing pole at just before 9:40 PM. An 18-year-old man was taken to hospital with serious injuries and sadly later died. Our thoughts are with his loved ones at this devastating time. A 14-year-old boy was also involved and sustained injuries which are not believed to be serious."

The Serious Collision Investigation Unit is leading the inquiry. Officers are reviewing CCTV footage and appealing for witnesses, particularly anyone with dashcam footage from the area around the time of the incident.
