UK Opens Massive Drone Warfare Testing Centre in Swindon

The United Kingdom has inaugurated a vast new centre dedicated to drone warfare testing in Swindon. Located at the sprawling 370-acre Panattoni Park, the site was formerly home to Honda's car plant, which closed in 2021.

Europe's Largest Uncrewed Systems Centre

The Uncrewed Systems Centre, spanning 545,000 square feet, is equivalent to more than ten football pitches. According to the Ministry of Defence (MoD), it is the largest facility of its kind in Europe.

Defence Secretary Dan Jarvis MP emphasised the strategic importance of the centre, stating that it will help the UK "embrace technologies" that are transforming modern warfare. "The character of warfare is changing, and it is changing fast," he said. "From Ukraine to the Middle East, we are seeing right now how uncrewed systems are rapidly evolving and reshaping conflicts – on land, in the air and at sea."

Accelerating Innovation

Mr Jarvis highlighted that the centre will allow the military to develop and deploy new technology in "a matter of weeks" rather than years. He added: "In this new era, those who innovate fastest will win."

Since July 2024, the MoD has invested over £450 million in uncrewed systems, including £300 million on research and development. In the past year, UK Defence Innovation has injected more than £142 million in rapid investment to scale up production of drones and anti-drone weapons.

Boost for Swindon's Economy

Matt Griffith, Director of Policy at the South West chamber of commerce Business West, described the centre as a "significant boost" for Swindon, solidifying its status as "a hub for defence manufacturing and innovation." He noted: "It activates a prime employment site, generating and retaining high-quality jobs in Swindon and across the wider supply chain. It also represents a clear win for the town and its collaboration with businesses in supporting and championing inward investment and the opportunities that defence and drone companies can bring."

Brigadier Stu Nasse, head of the UK Drone Coalition, explained the rationale behind selecting Swindon: "This location was chosen for all the right reasons: access to a technically proficient workforce, strong physical and digital infrastructure, and proximity to all facets of defence."

Drone Industry Growth in Swindon

The new MoD facility is the latest addition to a growing cluster of drone-related sites in Swindon. Last month, a military drone company backed by Donald Trump's son opened a factory in the town after securing a nearly £2 million deal to support UK defence activities. This followed the establishment of sites by Tekever, one of Europe's top drone manufacturing enterprises, and German defence firm Stark in Swindon last year.
