Bristol Airport Implements Comprehensive Parking Enforcement Initiative
A significant parking enforcement operation has been launched at Bristol Airport following numerous incidents of abandoned vehicles and stranded travelers. The airport is collaborating with North Somerset Council and Avon and Somerset Police to address persistent parking issues that have plagued the area.
Targeting Illegal Parking Operations
The crackdown specifically focuses on three main areas: illegal off-site parking operators, unregulated meet-and-greet companies, and nuisance parking on roads surrounding the airport. According to airport officials, some unauthorized off-site operators were parking over 1,000 vehicles during peak summer months, creating substantial problems for local residents and legitimate transport services.
Forty Action Points Agreed Upon
Following a dedicated parking surgery meeting between Bristol Airport representatives and local councillors, forty specific actions were agreed upon to improve transportation to and from the airport. These measures aim to benefit visitors, local residents, and authorized taxi companies operating in the area.
Key components of the enforcement plan include:
- Proposing to double the funding provided by Bristol Airport to support North Somerset Council's planning enforcement team
- Installing new signage to enforce no stopping or waiting in the lane directly off the airport roundabout
- Implementing parking restrictions for the Bridle Cottage layby on the A38 near the Fox and Goose, limiting waiting to a maximum of two hours
- Expanding the capacity of the airport's one-hour free waiting zone and improving related signage
Communication with Local Transport Providers
Local taxi firms will receive direct communication reminding them about the designated waiting zone, which offers free parking for the first hour. This initiative aims to discourage drivers from parking outside residential properties and in unauthorized areas.
Official Statement from Airport Management
Rob Henley, transport planning manager at Bristol Airport, emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts: "It's been vital that we work together with North Somerset Council and Avon and Somerset Police, as the only way to tackle parking issues is through a joined-up approach."
Henley continued: "We encourage those customers who can use public transport to consider travelling to the Airport this way. We have the A1 bus to and from Bristol, the A3 bus running between the Airport and Weston-super-Mare, and the A4 bus from Bath via Saltford, Keynsham and Hengrove. And we'll be announcing more routes soon."
The transport manager made a direct appeal to drivers: "We ask all customers who drive and taxi drivers to please be more considerate to the local community and not park outside homes. We recommend using our free waiting area rather than dropping off outside of people's houses and in laybys. A complimentary bus runs regularly from this area to the terminal."
Henley concluded by stating: "We are working hard with everyone to find and deliver the best resolutions to make a real difference to local communities."
Broader Transportation Improvements
The parking crackdown forms part of a broader initiative to enhance transportation infrastructure around Bristol Airport. The expansion of public transport options and improved signage are designed to provide viable alternatives to problematic parking practices while supporting the needs of both airport users and local residents.
