Moray Council Introduces Seasonal Campervan Overnight Parking Pilot in Burghead
Moray Council has unveiled a significant new pilot scheme that will permit overnight stays for self-contained campervans and motorhomes at Station Road car park in Burghead. This innovative initiative represents a strategic response to the growing popularity of motorhome travel across the United Kingdom.
Pilot Scheme Details and Operational Framework
The carefully structured trial will operate during the peak visitor season, running from April 1 to November 30, 2026. This seven-month period has been specifically chosen to accommodate the highest demand from touring visitors while allowing comprehensive data collection.
Under the scheme's provisions, a maximum of two self-contained vehicles will be permitted to stay overnight between 6pm and 10am, with a strict limit of one night per vehicle. Visitors will be required to make a payment of £7 per night through Moray Council's established PayByPhone parking application.
Community Consultation and Strategic Location Selection
The pilot follows extensive public consultation that demonstrated substantial community support for designated overnight parking facilities. Burghead was selected as the inaugural location due to several key factors, including strong local backing and the availability of essential waste disposal facilities at nearby Burghead Harbour.
Nicola Moss, Head of Operations & Environment at Moray Council, emphasized the balanced approach of the initiative: "This pilot is about finding a balance between welcoming visitors and respecting local communities. Burghead provides a good location to test how a managed overnight stay scheme works in practice."
Objectives and Implementation Strategy
The council has identified multiple objectives for this experimental program. Primarily, it aims to provide a safe and well-managed overnight option for visitors while simultaneously supporting the local economy through increased tourism. Equally important is the commitment to respecting the needs and concerns of permanent residents.
Comprehensive signage is being installed throughout the area to clearly outline the terms of use while directing visitors to nearby shops, amenities, and essential facilities. This thoughtful approach ensures that visitors can easily access local services while understanding their responsibilities during their stay.
Evaluation Process and Future Considerations
The trial period will serve as a crucial evidence-gathering phase, allowing council officials to monitor the scheme's effectiveness and collect real-world data about its implementation. Moss further explained the evaluation process: "The trial will allow us to gather real-world evidence and listen carefully to feedback before any decisions are taken about next steps."
This measured approach ensures that any future expansion or modification of overnight parking provisions will be based on concrete evidence and community input rather than speculation. The council has expressed hope that visitors will appreciate Burghead's natural beauty while treating the area with appropriate respect during their stays.
The introduction of this pilot scheme represents a progressive step in accommodating the evolving needs of modern travelers while maintaining the character and integrity of local communities throughout Moray.
