Solar Panel Work Triggers Parking Complaint Influx at Telford Hospital

Healthwatch Telford & Wrekin has received clarification regarding a recent surge in complaints about car parking at Princess Royal Hospital (PRH) in Telford. Chief Officer Jan Suckling informed a health and wellbeing board meeting that her email inbox has been flooded with increasing grievances from the public over recent weeks.

"More and more people are complaining about the car parking at PRH," Suckling stated during the Thursday session, highlighting the noticeable uptick in parking-related concerns.

Temporary Disruption from Solar Canopy Installation

Nigel Lee, Director of Strategy and Partnerships at The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH), confirmed that car parking remains a recognized issue at both hospital sites. However, he explained that the specific recent spike in complaints stems from the installation of solar power canopies over certain parking spaces.

"This represents an interruption rather than a permanent issue," Lee emphasized, assuring that the affected spaces will be returned to use once the installation is complete. The solar panel project, while causing temporary parking reductions, is part of broader environmental and operational initiatives.

Broader Health Service Concerns and Improvements

Beyond parking, Suckling noted that the public continues to raise concerns about GP access and hospital waiting lists. In response, Lee provided updates on outpatient service performance, stating that the trust is "amongst the most improved in the country" regarding outpatient waiting times.

He reported that outpatient waits are "continuing to reduce week on week," with management targeting the elimination of 52-week waits for treatment. Additionally, efforts are underway to ensure more patients are seen within the 18-week target timeframe.

The meeting underscored the balance between infrastructure improvements, like solar installations, and maintaining patient and visitor accessibility, while highlighting ongoing progress in healthcare delivery metrics at the NHS trust.
