Wolverhampton City Council Drastically Reduces Car Park Charges
In a significant move to bolster local commerce, Wolverhampton City Council has announced substantial reductions in parking fees across most of its city centre car parks. Effective from April 1, evening parking will cost just £2, while all-day parking will be available for £3.50 at select locations.
New Pricing Structure Details
The council has introduced a simplified and more affordable parking scheme designed to attract more visitors and support Wolverhampton's businesses. Key changes include:
- A flat £2 rate across all city centre council car parks (excluding St Peter's and Civic Centre car parks) between 5pm and 5am, representing a 78% reduction from the previous £9 charge for over four hours at central locations.
- A £3.50 parking fee for 12 hours at Fold Street car park (330 spaces) and St George's car park when arriving between 5am and 5pm, marking a 61% price drop at Fold Street.
- Reduced fees at Civic Centre car park, now open 24/7, with £10 for over four hours (up to 12 hours) and £15 for 24 hours.
- St Peter's car park prices aligned with other central sites, featuring reduced rates from £1.50 for one hour to £8 for up to 12 hours.
Council Leaders Emphasize Business Support
Councillor Chris Burden, Development Boss, stated: "These changes demonstrate our commitment to listening to local businesses and their employees. By implementing lower-cost parking options, we aim to support local jobs and make our city centre more vibrant and accessible for everyone."
He added that the initiative seeks to boost footfall both during daytime and evening hours, ensuring Wolverhampton remains competitive and attractive to visitors.
Transport Improvements and Strategic Goals
Councillor Qaiser Azeem, Transport Chief, highlighted: "Combined with technological upgrades at city centre car parks, these fee reductions will simplify the parking system and lower costs for residents, workers, and visitors. Our goal is to maintain Wolverhampton as a welcoming and accessible destination."
The decision follows successful consultations with businesses and a pilot £2 after 5pm scheme at Broad Street, which will continue. A council spokesperson explained that this forms part of the City Centre Evening and Night-time Economy Strategy, aimed at creating a more lively and welcoming atmosphere after dark while supporting daytime businesses.
Context and Future Plans
Wolverhampton's city centre boasts major attractions including the Grand Theatre, Wolves Football Club, University of Wolverhampton at The Halls, Superbowl UK at the Mander Centre, and Lockworks Cinema at the Chubb Buildings. The council plans a comprehensive review of all car park fees and charges later this year to further optimize the parking system.
